Grandad's Series 2

Post by NJV6 »

This Series 2 was bought by Grandad way back when, still need to find that out but it was not new when he got it. It was sold new in Heriot, a small village about 20 mins from home. It spent time in Alexandra with family then Westport, however the weather was getting to it so it was 'rescued' a few years ago and stored in tiny shed here on the farm. It was A framed home from westport.

Last wof was 2006 & it is still registered :) Anyway my Grandad is gone and it's kind of a waste getting left in the shed to rot.

So today was the day, right before lambing, the calm before the storm so to speak...

Its pretty good really, gave it some fuel today but it just leaked out the carb, think it needs some love. Can't get the tank bung out but it appears to have a fuel leak at the tank as well.

Need a LR parts specialist asap  - you there rex?

Really ? - cool, I do know it was one of the last S2's made being the 61 model. I need to find the engine number to see what it comes up as.

The Solex carb needs a bit of a once over, never pulled a carb apart :D

those carbs are simple as. clean it up and it'll be sweet.
rimmers or somewhere similar probably do a kit for pretty damn cheap. I imagine yours will just have a stuck float and a haggard top gasket. my citroen was similar. washed it with brake cleaner, knocked a new top gasket up out of a weetbix box to get it going and never bothered to come back to it haha

Is the top circle (white) the mixture and the bottom one the idle?

The Solex carb was actually buggered. The emulsion tube was broken and not repairable, I guess the engine swallowed the top piece of the carb  .

I have replaced it with a Zenith and still couldn't get it to fire, a new set of plugs and within about 1 second it roared into life :D . About a minute later I discovered the clutch was siezed, getting out of where it was parked up was a mission, trying to doa 20 point turn on the starter with 2 flat tyres.

Anyway a wash up, and both master and slave cylinders freed up and we were underway

The 600x16's are just wee beauties

Now to work on the brakes, front right is jammed on and maybe some sort of electronic ignition, the points are so worn its not really adjustable.

And everything underneath is coated in oil, if it leaks, its leaking. Where to start
