Electrical problem - Not charging - 24 volt Safari

Any reason why after fitting a brand new alternator why the batteries still won't charge ?

Volt meter on instrument panel shows under 24 volts when engine running even with higher revs.

Put new alternator on and still no change

All wires to alternator are correct and connected

Not 100% but when we fitted new alternator last month we disconnected one battery and the voltmeter shot up to26 volts and dropped back under 24 when reconnected.

As well as the new alternator I've put 2 fully charged batteries from another vehicle in today but still showing under 24 volts......any idea's ?

just a quick update.
Just seen that there is no red ignition lights when ignition turned on.
glow plug lights up and works

A multimeter will be your friend and take a bit of guesswork out of it.
a) the batteries could be shot and suffering low internal resistance - most auto shops will have a load tester that will tell you this.
b) assuming batteries and alternator ARE good, a fusible link would be the next place to look. I don't have my bible here with me or I'd tell you the colour, it MAY be labelled, there's a gang of them on a block infront of the brake booster.

But it sounds like a).
does the voltage increase only with one specific battery removed, or either of them?

Pull out multimeter I had Sam problem.
Meter charge wire to battery on volts and ohms. Should be bugger all.
Meter alternator body to your 24v negative terminal

Meter battery negative terminal to body

Meter between batteries on the negative and positive terminal joining batteries.

This should highlight any issues and your looking for high resistance or a voltage (drop)

I also rerun the charge wire directly to battery.



I bought a 77mm pulley for my alt to get shafts speed higher. These alternators don't charge at idle. Set idle to 2000rpm when testing

Alternators need load to charge too. So if a battery is suffering low resistance the alt will think its already charged and lower the output.
