Jeep Cherokee diffs.

Post by nivaman »

Are the Jeep Cherokee diffs (Dana 30 etc) able to be run with the front hubs locked constantly ie so the vehicle can be run in constant 4x4 at all times.
Cheers.

Think the earlier ones run a system similar to the pajero where one axle is disengaged and the transfer disengages but one wheel still spins the spider gears in the diff when in 2wd.

So first need to determine what year axles ya looking at .

 duh moment. So yeah the earlier hubs were just spline plates locking the hub to the axle so yes they are engaged all the time.

Depends on the transfer case, some had full time, most XJs in nz probably don't. IIRC the V8 ZJ had a full time xfer case (NP23xx) ??

Yeah fixed drive flanges, kind of a bummer.

I dunno. Full time 4wd - either you're into it or you're not.

Seems I may have to see what transfer case the Cherokee has to determine if the diff has hubs or not?.

Wont have free running hubs from the factory irrespective of whether its full time or part time.

And free running hub conversion for a Dana 30 is around $1500USD cause of the unit bearing setup

Yeah the transfer case should have a tag on it somewhere with model number, would be a good start
