We just use a tent, thinking about making a top for our trailer for camping, is high enough for light off roading behind the surf, hilux hubs and rims with 30s.

We recently put the awning on, and it was the best move...

I'm just about to work on getting the Cruiser a bit better set up for camping. Need to re-jig the storage in the back to fit our new Engel fridge, put in 2nd battery to power it, want to put a fold out table/bench at the back somewhere... Hoping to head south for a week or 2 next month.

Has anyone ever seen a decent awning setup off the back of a vehicle? Some extra shelter would be nice but I'm often pushing through scrub etc so something hanging off the side wouldn't work & I don't want to make an already tall rig any bigger with a roof rack. The rear mounted awnings I've seen look quite narrow, would be good to have something that expands out wider than the truck.

What model Engel did you get? We are looking at fridges at the moment, dometic/waeco seem to be hard to beat price wise with smiths city farmlands discount.

All the fox-wing ones I've seen mount along the side & are pretty long, a short version of one of those would be the go. Might have to talk with my upholsterer mate about building a frame for him to cover.

We got an Engel MT35FP. The 32L size was about right for us & it's dimensions made it a better fit into the back of the cruiser than anything similar. It was $$$$ but really good quality & tough construction. I know a couple of people with 20yr+ old Engels that are still going strong.

been looking at one of these tents for years, even built my trailer to the correct height to house one of the 9x12 tents.
how do they stand up in NZ winds etc and anything else can tell me about this brand, keen to hear

I love the camper tent setup. At first I thought I was clever enough to design a tent like these, but now that I've got one, there is so many things that they have put into the design that I would have never thought of, like the design of the windows. It handles wind no problem, but the Aussies don't have rain like we do in the South. The canvas is waterproof enough, but the design of the bracing poles leave them in contact with the canvas so it does leak a little where the poles are touching the roof. I have come up with a way to get around this, but haven't had a chance to try it yet. The quality of the tent is top notch, good stitching and good reinforcing in the corners etc.
After camping in a hiking tent all my life, I love having a real bed and a bit of space.
The trailer is built like a brick outhouse, 7 leaf springs, 31's, electric brakes , solar power, 80l water tank, off road coupling, gas bottle and jerrycan holders, and I've just set up a diesel heater from a camper van because I'm getting really soft in my old age!
Honestly, I don't think I would change anything about the set up, although we all know there is no such thing as a completed project!!

this is our new camper from save barn $6500, it's on a 7x4 trailer ,can be removed 15 square metres all up dought that we will put it all up,
has a pop up fly over trailer section to defect the rain off the canvas roof
have bigger units around $11k 9x4 trailers
