D.I.Y. major repairs on your main transport

Do you spend the dosh and get it done in the shop or do you have a crack yourself and suffer the inconvenience of no car for a while, not to mention the stress of tight bolts, dirt in the eye (one of the joys of 4wd maintenance) oil all over the floor no matter how careful you are and the GF consistantly asking if YOU know what you are doing and reminding you that it is slightly more complicated than the lawn mower :evil:

Hmmm, I voted, i'll do the minors and let sommone else do the biggies, I know I need to do a cam belt soon, but me thinks someone else can do that one and i'll just 'pay the bill'!

You need another option
"would do it all if the GF didn't nag so much..."

For my daily runner's I just buy $500 cars if you can keep them going for 2yrs your depreshiation (I know spelt rong

) is only $200 a yr and if its a big'y to fix run it to the wreaker they'll give ya $100-$200 for em, so I cheat and only do the small stuff

She doesnt ask me if I know what I'm doing, she justs asks when I'll be done and can go do the shopping....

Heh, all you need in Westport is your legs to go do the shopping, and with four days off i have heaps of time up my sleeve!!
As for the GF, well, does a plutonic relation ship with a young lady that has four legs and a tail count?? :wink:

No problems there, she just runs off with the tools when she thinks its time i went and played with her. :lol:

You spend the first couple of days off recovering!!!
I work for Solid Energy at the Stockton mine, i do four 12hr day shifts and then have four days off.

I nearly always do my own repairs. Sometimes I need to seek professional advice on diagnosing the problem, but will give most things a go. If the job involves being double jointed to reach the part through all of the crap in the engine bay then it goes to someone else who is being paid to lose the skin off his hands.

i do all of the work on my vehicles myself tyres and wheel alignment are about the only things i let other people do on my vehicles

my solution is simple have 2 vehicles and make sure one is running at all times

i have one car as my main runabout cos it is cheaper than drining my V8 into work my runabout will use about 20 litres of petrol to and from work for a week were as rangi would use 3-4 times that

it also helps having a vehicle that only takes 45 mins to remove the drivetrain completely

I always try and fix it myself. Workshop manual and half a day can see must things done. Best part is if your out having fun when things go wrong you've got a better chance of getting home.

My dad told me that building it and fixing it was half the fun and I always believe my dad :wink:

I never could get used tothe idea of "learning" to pay someone else to fix it, I'd rather "learn" how to fix it myself
