Mmmmmm Still a bit vague I can do the bar because it's a 4x4 manufactured before 2003..
However welding to the structure... I read as a no no.
I do however think I have a plan to tie it back without welding. wont be quite as good but do believe it will work good...
Cheers

I would ask your local certifier. It's hard to take if you go for WOF and find you need a cert1bad4x wrote:Mmmmmm Still a bit vague I can do the bar because it's a 4x4 manufactured before 2003..

Re: X5 Project.
Well that's the transformation complete.
Tow hooks attached & winch bar tied back to the subframe with no weld.
Accessory roof bar with spare mount added.
Passed its WOF with flying colours, wof guy was impressed with how well I had skirted, & pushed the rules to limits, without the need for cirt.
Next stop MUD!

Re: X5 Project.
plates aren't a wof issue. they cant actually fail you for not having a front plate at all, even.
Re: X5 Project.
Wow. Didn't know that. Cops can bust you for not having one though..Cameron wrote:plates aren't a wof issue. they cant actually fail you for not having a front plate at all, even.

Re: X5 Project.
I'm not very familiar with the X5 , does it have a low ratio in the transfer case or not? Looks really good, approach and departure angles are amazing compared to stock. Let's see how the suspension and steering hold up off road. I think you will need the traction control switched off for mud, as it will kill your forward momentum.

Yeah its the cops that it matters to.1bad4x wrote:Wow. Didn't know that. Cops can bust you for not having one though..Cameron wrote:plates aren't a wof issue. they cant actually fail you for not having a front plate at all, even.
I went for years of fairly decent km per week with no front plate. In a non conspicuous car and wasn't driving like a mincer so probs didn't draw attention. Wof people never cared. We t past hundreds of speed cameras well above the limit like the hat jot attention single ticket hahaha
Re: X5 Project.
No low range, has tiptonic so can hold in 1st, has plenty of power so crawling wont be to much of an issue just have to be very light on the pedal, will be a lot more gentle on this, unlike my other 4x4's where if it didn't make it back up & hit it harder..BlakeNZ wrote:I'm not very familiar with the X5 , does it have a low ratio in the transfer case or not? it will be interesting on when & when not to use electrics, your right though soft slush & bogs it will have to be off or 1st spin will cut the power, & loose all momentum.

Re: X5 Project.
i'm going to suggest, after looking at your wheels/tyres in relation to your body panels, plus knowing you have a V8, that your next move (after your first mud outing) will be some form of mud flaps!

Re: X5 Project.
Up for sale already?

Re: X5 Project.
Just a habit I have, always seem to have my cars listed. if someone offers enough. I will sell, shed a tear & move on to next project.zukmeista wrote:Up for sale already?![]()
never really liked them. does get annoying all the same, get the tiniest bit of mud on a tyre & end up with splatter allover the side.BlakeNZ wrote:i'm going to suggest, after looking at your wheels/tyres in relation to your body panels, plus knowing you have a V8, that your next move (after your first mud outing) will be some form of mud flaps!
Indeed I am looking forward to the same, working most weekends at mo to make up for sneaking down to the snow mid week... will prob be down again this week if forecast is correct. a promise ---- Dirt will be posted here!basics wrote:been a very interesting read from the get go, finished product looks pertty good too![]()

Re: X5 Project.
just thinking about your project and reminded me of something, if you have ever seen the documentary "race to Dakar" they used one of these (or similar, maybe slightly newer model) as a support vehicle with aftermarket suspension the works, from memory it did the entire rally with only one breakage.
Waiter...there is a drought in my glass.
Re: X5 Project.
No I haven't, is it the same one they used in the 5th gear race against the bike.? if so looks like they can take a far bit of punishment.. well that one had a few more mods. still Promising!Crash bandicoot wrote:just thinking about your project and reminded me of something, if you have ever seen the documentary "race to Dakar" they used one of these (or similar, maybe slightly newer model) as a support vehicle with aftermarket suspension the works, from memory it did the entire rally with only one breakage.

Finally got some dust under the wheels. Ok Ok it wasn't a challenge. But as we all know video & photos never do steepness justice.
however I was happy with the performance. do need some more challenging tracks.
I just had to get this up because I said I would. Keep watch hope to get some better stuff soon...

Re: X5 Project.
With all this rain hopefully Woodhill will be open soon.... in meantime I have had a few more minor off-road excursions nothing challenging as yet, however I did get a true X-axle spot with 1 front & rear properly lifted. drove through nicely tried stopping but had to back up & keep minor momentum to get through. not bad for a awd....
Time for Snorkel. doubt I will need it but better safe than sorry...
1st mock ups & tacked together.

Cheers Basics.
Update on Snorkel
Masked up & ready to cut.

Went the stitching 4mm holes & powerfile direction.
Kept the holes less then 4mm apart so can join with slight angling of the drill. keeps it neat.

DIY riv-nut tool.
long bolt, nut on next then washer, then something to stop the riv-nut spinning (I use angle iron so can hold spanner at same time) then riv-nut far enough up the bolt shaft to use all thread in the riv-nut. insert in to hole, hold the angle iron & the bolt still, & tighten the nut until solid.! done.
