Man, I remember watching that Channel 9 Camaro flipping on its lid like it was yesterday.
And who can forget Dick Johnson's green Falcon demolishing itself in the trees coming onto Conrod straight during qualifying. Remember that like it was yesterday as well. Greatest thing was, Dickie was in the race the next day in a brand new car!
Yep, bring back the "open to all" style of Bathurst. Holden v Ford just doesn't cut the mustard. I remember one of Dick Johnson's comments during those years when, in one of his moods, he referred to the smaller, slower cars like Corolla's etc. as "wombats in billycarts". Classic

Yes, they showed Ford and Holden how far back down the evolution ladder they were.
I think it is because of the Skylines that the Australian Touring Car Championship is only a 2 marque affair.
Rather than "If you can't beat them, join 'em" and hurry up development on 4wd (or better terminology - all wheel drive) chassis, they banned them. Sore losers (and that includes the Holden and Ford fans who wanted the better and faster Euro and Jap machinery banned).
Holden or Ford could be dominating World Touring Car Championships by now if they had developed an all wheel drive chassis and twin-turboed the V8's. Imagine the spin-off into road going XR8's and/or SS Commodore's. It could have been awesome.
Instead Ford came up with the Territory (based on Falcon chassis and running gear) and Holden has the X-Cross (or something) series of Commodores. Yawn.
