somthing is not right.

the other month i took a road trip up to mt cook and did some camping and stuff. on the way back i went up to the clay cliffs and got realy stuck.
got pulled out and kept haeding home to queenstown. about half way i noticed a grinding noise every now and then in the front left. and couldnt figue it out, thought it might be a bearing going.
had it checked and the mechanic found nothing wrong. anyway went offroad today and found that my 4x4 rocky is now a 2x4 no drive in the front at all, not happy!
could the problem be the manual locking hub? it would explain the noise.
and does anyone have experiance with this problem as the 4wd mechanics in my area are expencive and "realy busy at the moment" any advice would be greatly apreceated.

What sort of truck? What sort of manual hubs does it have?

And yes it sounds like you have a stuffed hub.

put it in 4wd in the drive ie turn into your drive, engage 4wd, engage your hubs and drive upto your garage, then jack each front wheel independently and if one turns then its busted on that side. Start stripping off the hub on that side. From then on its just a process of elimination. If you can turn the shaft by hand then busted CV or similar, otherwise examine the spline on the end, and the hub etc.

Generally if it doesnt feel right then it probably isnt :wink:

cheers mike ill check it out tomoro (why diddnt i think of that)

its daihatsu rocky but not sure what make the hubs are, just the factory ones i guess.
where can i get new hub if theyre stuffed do you have to replace both to keep them the same?

well i did that. i took the hub apart and found it to be quite coroded inside and that the dog gear was not moving in or out smoothly, cleaned it up and reasembled it and now i have the exact same noise in the other side, and still no drive

ill check that one too but im leaning toward thinking its something else like the diff :cry:

p.s they are aisins. the hubs i mean

well its all sorted it was just all gummed up and stuck but all better now thanks..........
