swampa, your father was correct, in the early days of the small diesels the M's didn't have a good reputation but now days I don't think they are any worse than the other makes.
MattG, the question has allready been asked , what are you going to use it for? The L200 is a good vehicle but not the best Offroad ute you can get.
If you are going to do easy offroad trips, if there is such a thing the L200 will do fine with a set of muds, suspension lift, snorkel and TOW HOOKS.
They arn't the easiest vehicle to set up and after market parts are hard to come by. Who are you going to go out playing with ? , what sort of vehicles do they have, are you going to buy the L200 and then in a few months time wish you had bought something more capible, don't buy because it is cheaper than other makes because the end price could become a lot higher in the end. Keep asking questions and see if you can ride shotgun on a few trips to get an idea of what may suit your needs best.
As for Fathers advise ----- I wish I had heeded his advise and I wouldn't have to wear Glasses now.

MattG, to help you with your last post there are some points that need clarifying.
1) ( I mainly want it for my dog to take to the river ) , What sort of
Dog ?, Is it a big or small breed, will make a difference as to what
type of seating is needed, you may want to consider an auto and
fit paw controls for throttle and brake,
.
2) ( how reliable are they motor wise? ), What motor is it, 2.5 or 2.8
not that it makes much difference, they both go ok. has the vehicle got any maintanance history, how many km's has it done?
I'm LAUGHING WITH YOU, NOT AT YOU,
