Check out with one of the local clubs in your area as there is a combined 4x4 clubs trip there on the 18th of this month from memory, going over some high country farm. This is just going from memory.........
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

Do we have any other people from Timaru on the forum that might be able to suggest some trips?

Timaru Town & Country Club have a fairly active 4WD Section.

As for trips....

Macauly Hut (Lodge) up the east side of Lake Tekapo - then turn right to follow the arrows (its become almost a highway) but the "hut" is fantastic.

Red Stag Hut - also up the eastern side of Tekapo is a good trip. (Some good hunting in the area too!)

Instead of turning right to follow the Macauly, cross over to the infamous Lilybank Station, and keep following the track up the Godley.

Once at Red Stag Hut... you can keep going along various tracks up to the Glacier lakes - below the Maud Glacier. From there it's only something silly like 26kms (as the crow flies) to Whataroa!! Slow rock crawling in places as the track "disappears"

Both Red Stag & Macauly are easily done on your own (unless the Macauly is running dirty and fast - there have been plenty of drowned trucks in the Macauly!)

Black Forest track is a nice drive (payment required for access - last I heard it was about $10.00 per vehicle)

Thompsons Track (aka Rise and Shine Road) from Tarras to St Bathans and then back through Danseys Pass to Kurow - then Hakataramea Pass, and Mackenzie Pass to Fairlie are a also another good days drive.

Red Hut, and Apricot Hut (aka Cullers Hut) up the Lake Ohau and up the Hopkins is another great trek.

Advisable to go with another vehicle in the case of getting stuck on the river crossings. Especially through from red Hut to Apricot Hut. Red Hut was re-built a few years ago - don't be decieved - the Sky dish is purely for looks!!

The track thru to Red Hut is fairly well defined, but the river crossings can be tricky with sloppy pea-gravel at the exit points. If on your own, check the enrty & exit points on foot before hitting them!!

Both the Hopkins (Red Hut + Apricot) and the Macaluy are braided river beds - so they do change quickly with witer flows, and are home to plenty of bird-life. Stay to the defined tracks.

Hope this helps.

I forgot to add - the guy at Fairlie BP is one of the organisers of a good 4WD Fund raiser each year - I think it's late January - into February sometime. Access into some private blocks - and the fund raising is for local charities as well. Spark arrestors are required for deisels, but can be obtained for the huge sum of about $5.00 from there (Fairlie BP) if you don't have one. :D

Red Stag Hut - also up the eastern side of Tekapo is a good trip. (Some good hunting in the area too!)

Red Stag hut is up the Godley river up near the glacier, not up the same side as Macauley.

Yes...you are quite correct - I was referring to the beginning - travel up the eastern side of Lake Tekapo... :D

It's a public road along the side of Lilybank. Just beware of "straying" across the fenceline.

There were a number of problems a previous owner (Gerard Oldeoltoff) had with "poachers" and various other alleagations.

Always a good trip though :D

Do we just turn up for the Ashburton trip? or is there a trip leader we have to let know. The Godley Valley trip is an awsome trip for anybody else thinking about going up there. Its easily done own your own if the Macualy river is low
