Is it illegal?
Is it illegal?
I'v got a 85 413 and want to do some cheap mods. I was thinking of putting the springs over the axels but not sure if its illegal or worthwhile?
Yes It should be certified. Certification costs approx $375 for all the mods you currently have eg SPOA, Roll Cage, Bigger Tyres, Body Lift.
So it should be certified, but no not everyone does have it certified and some get away with it. But there will be issues with your insurance compay if you have a crash, and if the cops do pull you up about it there may be a fine, and it may not pass a WOF.
If done badly can be dangerous, but if done well is worthwhile if you can do it yourself, gives about 4" + of Lift....
Where abouts are you?

I'm in christchurch. I spoke to somebody who put me off the idea. I'm considering new leaf springs with new soft long shocks. The suzukis light and good articulation is key. A 4" rise would increase the chance of rolling. What do you think about that? Also planning on skid plates and getting the shock mount up abit.

Best to contact a Low Volume Vehicle Certifier... have a look at this link:

and this one:

I know there is one guy in Lincoln Road who is a LVVC certifier. They generally seem reasonably happy if you ask them about what you are thinking about doing & what the requirements are.
I do know that it is worth while getting everything done you want to before getting the LVVC done, as it is the saem price for 1 thing - ie bigger feet - as it is for several - ie high suspension lift, body lift, bigger wheels & tyres, engine transplant etc.
Be aware, I have read somewhere of someone having a LVVC for bigger wheels/tyres combo - and Mr Plod pinged them 'cos they'd taken the big feet off and put "standard" wheels/tyres back on. the cert plate said that the vehicle was certified for the those wheels/tyres - not the standard ones. looks like it turned really pear-shaped !!

Another thing to be aware of re SPOA ing a Zook is that though all the yanks do it, their Samurai's are 100mm wider in the axles & spring mounts than a 413 & therefore a bit more stable.
