Project HiMuZuLux- Isuzu MU soild axle swap - Day 2

Post by SupraLux »

Well, I guess I had to finally get around to it... the final decider was parking beside a Rav4 and having a lower roofline! Sorry for the size of this post, if you want to see all the photos then go make a cup of tea while they all load...

So here it begins (and will hopefully finish :) ) - Project HiMuZuLux, combining the comfort and (I think) nice shape of the MU with the suspension and articulation of a modified Hilux.

The truck never even saw me coming... just sitting there, it probably thought it was in for an oil change or something...

At this point I was enjoying myself... randomly undoing bolts and generally undoing all the engineering achievements Mr Isuzu had worked so hard to achieve...

Image

I also tried the new front springs in place for length - might have to modify the gearbox crossmember too... I think the shackle is going to end up in the middle of it...

Once everything is unbolted and removed from the truck it looks pretty empty... this process took about 6 hours to do both sides, drink a beer or two, walk the dog, buy a foot-long sub and a coffee and a 22mm spanner, and scratch my head a couple of times... not bad for day 1... I suspect the amount of cutting and grinding that will be needed to tidy it all away will take almost another day...

Oh, heres the front diff assy removed - anyone need one?

And so here it lies for the night, rather less, but somehow rather more than when it began... tomorrow hopefully I'll line the axle up under it to see how it looks...

MU Solid Axle Swap - Day 2

Post by SupraLux »

Gods F%&king teeth theres a lot of webbing and crap welded into the A-arm supports  ... and the front one is actually a solid block of forged steel! I used an entire 9" disc trying to figure out how to remove it - and its still bloody well there!

I'm just going to trim the other side off just flush with the chassis rail rather than remove it - its too beefy and the welds are too well penetrated to remove it without major trouble and possibly cutting the frame rail itself.

Here is the entire concentrated efforts of nearly 3 hours... one side nearly done. I'm not looking forward to day 3...

Day three was spent doing work at polytech so my students could get the results they have been hanging out for... tomorrow is looking good for more grinding... sigh
