moding the beast

Post by albundy »

Hi guys,
ust an udate on the u-boat AKA pathy. Have just had a 50mm lift done and man it looks awesome. I reckon that with this and my Old Man Emu suspension I can now get a set of 33" under the bitch. Poor sods are having some problems designing the barwork that I particularly want. Not much of the chassis to mount on, but if ARB can do one then these guys can too. Now need to think more on underbody protection. Trying to stay away from sheet steel underneth as the barwork will be heavy enough. Any suggestions out there??? Coming soon truck mounted PRS, dual battery system and moving the ECU to glovebox.

Thanks for that, urethane and aluminium sound a little too expensive. What size boxtube did you use, did you crimp the ends to keep h2o out, and did they work or rocks go inbetween them?

From memory, it was just some 12mm box, with a section of 3mm plate at the front to provide more surface area for sliding accross things.
It was just a quick job to see if it would work, but it proved plenty strong enough so i left it as it was. I still have it sitting at home so i will measure the box. I went for 12mm as i didn't want to sacrifice to much clearence under neath. Solid bar may have been a better choice.
I was looking for a none vehicle mounted photo of it but is gone.

Thanks for that info Diesilboy. Padero: I have done a body lift not suspension. My ARB suspension lifted it 2", the body lift will give me 50mm clearance for panels and wheel arches. I have a CLROC club member doing it. Greg Knight 363 Wilsons Rd 3660222 or 0274 342 094. He and his workers can do any mods you want. I will be going back for more. They even do auto electrical work. About 2K all up: bodylift, front and rear bars and side bars.

 2K!!!!!!
I suppose when you break it down, your bar work would swallow a good deal of that labour wise.

Yeah, the barwork is $1500 and the lift $500. The lift took some time as 50mm is harder and more complex then 40mm. Needed to severly remodel the radiator mounts. The bar work is very complex as the chassis comes done on an angle not straight out like tonkatoys and safaris, making the front bull bar harder to fit for what I want to use it for, but it can and will be done. The rear bar needs to go out and get a certified tow hitch/recovery points fitted hence the additional cost there. The cheapest part are the sidebars. There needs another mount welded to the chassis to mount it but that won't be a problem. Don't anyone let on to the wife what this is costing as she will hit the roof. This year I will probably spend 7K moding my truck this year, lucky I have a 4K back pay coming next week, something the wife does not know about. :D

moding the beast

I have taken off all that shiny chrome stock shit and had replacment bars made similar to what I had but they wrap around the sides of the front guards. The guards I have had severly trimmed for more room for wheel articulation. The rear has also been removed and replacement made. Done it for strength and so I can use a highlift jack on it. I can now lift from front and rear, and all four corners.
