Smokin'

Post by fweddy »

Lol my poor truck, me and it are having a few goes at each other lately.

First it starts over heating

I fix that and give it a solid mount fan

It's also doing a grumble down the front end

Then I leave the key on and it unlocked overnight and flatten the battery (horrors! got jumped by another of those ever present Honda Civics) - explanation: was testing my sister's trailer lights and got distracted

Then coming home with my electrician brother from repairing a light fitting at my rental house last night, I get overtaken by my sister (returning from taking the nephew to the doctor after he placed a tiger lily seed up his nose) in a 2ltr diesel corolla (you know those gutless sewer car slugs). My truck is loosing performance, can't even get to 100 ks before the intersection about 2 kms away. Every time I get out it smells a bit burnt. I figured it was all because of the fixed fan and the fan belt slipping. but this is getting crazy!

Pulled in last night after the drag with the sister (reaching a total grand speed of 100kph in about 1.5kms and being totally whipped by this diesel corolla) and the truck is smoking - like lots of smoke coming from under the left front guard. I figure the fan belt is cooking as it was squealing from trying to keep up with its fixed fan. After looking at it for a while I figured that was no fan belt smoke, it's still billowing so I run pop the bonnet, funny, no smoke under there! but its still coming from under the guard.

The rim is HOT, the cv and hub is HOTTER, the brake disk and is COOKING and the brake pads are SMOKING.

While things are cooling down I take the wheel off and then after a little more cooling (not quite enough really ) I took off the calipers and took them to bits and found the slave cylinders were jammed. Took a lot of effort and three of us muttering various suggestions to get them out.

Then after every one else had gone to bed I freed them up and reassembled and fitted to the truck at about 10:30-11 out in the dark, Fortunately the other sister came home about then and playfully attempted to run me over, perfectly shining her lights right where I needed it to reattach and align the brake line which I have been struggling with a for about 5 minutes in the dark.

Then before bleeding or even figuring if it was fixed I headed off to bed leaving the back window down and the driver's door open
(Explanation: that was left like that to let the dog come out when she pleased but she was well gone to bed).

It rained here last night

Like my mama always said, "keep 'em guessing........"

haha, well, unless "fweddy" is short for "Fweddina", and you're a 6 foot blonde without "between-the-legs-dangly-bits", then it's for the truck....

ah hmm - what's up round here, the whole outfit seems to be changing from truck to um, other stuff. looks like we'll either need a refocus here or, well, hmm, I was gonna ask Mike about starting up the all new "real off road express" and renaming this the "home in bed" forum but then certain moving pictures reminded me he's also distracted, (and distracting)

but any way 'back on track'

Well we are trying to keep even. I'm not sure what to expect from the truck as a counter attack after last night's episode. But any way, its all part of having fun and learning.

I guess that's what you get for such a great bargain that 'has hardly been used off-road' all the parts aren't exercised. it is pretty tidy tho - the wof bloke even commented.

I'm threatening it with words like trade me but am first considering what else is better that would be as good a bargin.

oh! I know!

(here's hoping!)

Toyota 8) Hilux :D Surf :) allegedly one of the best trucks (if it was beam axle) to make into the ideal off road monster. But this one has a lot to do to get to that stage - although fun for $ spent its pretty good.

Oh and also - it will be cheaper insurance (cause it ain't worth much) and it has some minor issues but its never let me down.

Besides you haven't had one of these - yet

we spit and spark at each other a bit but get on pretty well

Image

Now dain't that look cute! (its one of the photos I took when threatening to sell it but I can't fault it enough to sell it yet.

yeah is a shame about the ferry costs aye, I guess it does just tip the scale of value for value to make it not quite a comparison

Actually its sitting out in the rain with one leg cocked at the moment waiting for me and sunday.

Even though I've had a host of fun and taken it off road a quite a number of times in the month or so I've had it, I only used it for what I bought it for for the first time last night - cheap hack for carting gear back and forth to the rental (actually fits a ladder!)

Problem is now I'm getting tempted to get a more capable off road truck (=$) when the off road capability was meant to be a secondary reason...
