FJ40 Project

Post by MNC »

OK, this may be the start of financial ruin for me but have spent too many hours watching Niblik's BJ40 build. So here goes...

Have just purchased a Fiberglass tub & recently blasted FJ40 Chassis.

Plan is to do all the mods i've wanted to do to my mud truck but since they'll cost a few $$$ will start from scratch and try to get it on the road.

Here is the starting point... Lets see how many years this project takes

Sorry Ben, I didnt know you were keen - but hey all is fair in love, war, and Trademe

Mod's planned - Start with:
Front Shackle reversal,
Front & Rear Spring reversal,
Swapping spring packs for flatter 5 leaf 60 series cruiser ones,
Power steering out of 60 series,
Put in 60 series front and rear diffs (hub to hub) with disks brakes front (STD) and rear (80 series),
Spring Over Axel conversion.

Paint up tub and my existing bonnet to match (need a fibreglass windscreen and doors first). Any ideas on colours guys? I saw a mean Navy blue wagon that had white/ice flames on the bonnet

That should keep me busy for a while  Shall I estimate a project build time? NO WAY! probabily take years and end in divorce but it'll b worth it in the end

Happy Days, picked up new tub yesterday. Here is a shot of my brother having lunch in it on the way home

Image

Chassis must be post 1980's as has the bigger 40mm spring bushes. Didn't realise from the auction but the springs are aftermarket 50mm lift  . Got the truck home and rested the front on upside down diff (as if sprung over). with 31's i'm still going to need a ladder to get into this truck

Pleantly of clearance for a new set of big tyres though

This shot is actual hight with 31's. Think I will get some old saggy springs before doing SOA.

Image

And a shot of the Tub - pleanty of work ahead of me

sweet!!

thats an awesome platform to start with.. :thumleft:

as for the springs, yep, definitely get some old saggy ones.. bring the overall centre of gravity down an easy couple of inches..

woohoo, and so it begins!!

If you look hard you can see its had a body lift too

Have a look at the second photo under the firewall. 2 lots of spacers.

Thinking of installing oxgyen into the 40 (being up that high).

I wouldn't have done a body lift myself and am thinking about taking back to standard. Any views on that guys?

Would prefer to trim wheel arches and keep a little lower to the ground than have body lift.

Don't be concerned - SOA will still happen 8) . I deff want those springs above the diffs to increase clearance and reduce drag.

soa and no body lift fella... with the soa, you'll get around 6 inches of lift away from the tyres, hence no need for body lift.. :D

oh, and with the spring reversal and shackle reversal, you'll need to trim rear guard.. from t/m photos, ya got raised fronts already.. ;)

the red line shows roughly where i'm gonna trim........ roughly..

thats the lot reversed with only 31's on.. and if ya gonna do the slightly wider 60 axles, if the artic up a bit, body-rubbo-presto... :D

May do. Or I may put on my other truck as it could use a lift to run the 33's.

Unless they are worth a few $$$ I'll probabily hold onto them. Will PM you anyway.

Hadn`t even thought of that yet. No idea what to call it except project right now

I was actually thinking of starting a poll on what engine /gearbox combo everyone thinks I should put in.

Here are the choices:
1. Straight swap of the 4.2ltr 2F striaght 6 in my other truck (this engine has had a $10k port & polish job), like this choice as already have all the parts and could probabily be a homer with a small amount of help
2. A dirty big 350 Chevy. Classic engine - truck was certified for one but previous owner let rego laps so cert gone :(
3. Lexus V8 - a favourite for power to weight - want to keep my truck as light as possible but will have to pay someone to install for me (big $$$)

Right now the most likely option wil be straight 6 swap. Was thinking about having it Dyno tuned to see what its got.

Go the 350, they are dead easy bolt up fit with an adaptor kit. A nice simple conversion that fits well, runs well, sounds the part and certing is easy

Yeah, I like the idea of Lexus V8 (would be in truck already if money was no problem) but little worried about how much work involved in total setup.

It depends on whether you want a manual or auto?
