Kaikoura exploration trip

Post by albundy »

Looking at heading up to Kaikoura weekend 10-11 march. Plan on heading up the friday evening and camping down by the beach near the Kowai bridge. Saturday head up Rakataura river have lunch, then work our way up the Kowai River, see how far we can go and make camp. Have a look around on sunday and head back that afternoon.
Would expect this to be grade 3-4. Snorkels would be required and articul;ation would be an advantage as there may be some small rockhopping to be done. Who's in

I woulda been all over that, but alas I havnt completed the surf rebuild yet.

Maybe if there is a spare seat or it gets moved back by a month or so.

I'll wait with interest... 8)

Good on ya Dave. I may be able to get cheap accomodation at a hostel in KK if anyone is interested. The owner was a patient on my ward a few weeks ago and said that if I wanted to head up he would do a deal for me. Feel like spending a nite in KK getting on the juice or camping, what do dudes want to do.

Access to property denied currently secondary to the roar. Maybe in the future he hopes. Anyways, we can explore a few rivers up that way, really want to see how far we can get trucks up the Kowai as I know I can get a fair way up on an ATV.

Plan on arrivng in KK at about 4ish. Think we should all meet there. Head up the Puhi Puhi valley to a campsite I know up there for friday nite. Fuel up @ about 9ish and then head up the Kahutara river. Head back to KK via the inland road and then head up the kowai. Know of some flat areas we can camp at. Sunday see how far we can actually drive up the river (have done ths on an ATV) then head back, fuel up and drive back to chch. Should be able to have the camp television gong but will check on restrictons. Lookng forward to explorng some new ground although I have hunted the Kowai on foot years ago.

Sounds like fun!! Thought to myself, when I saw the Conway, that it would be a great river to drive up in summer levels.
Sooo, seeing this post, I lit up Google earth and started looking to see what she'd be like.
Unfortunately, the KOWAI river is not in Kaikoura!!

at best, it maybe as far away from ChCH as North canty and thats pulling the rubber in the map right out to its limit!!

are you SURE you mean the KOWAI RIVER??

Thanks for a great trip guys, had a blast. Just annoyed I couldn't join you for the Hapuku river run.

Will try to get some pics loaded in the morning.

Awesome trip, and I came out relatively unscathed, with the only damage from the Kautura river being a dent in the front diff
