Water/Air Intercoolers for turbo diesels ???

Post by adventures_more »

I just bought a 2nd hand intercooler from a late model Nissan Silvia turbo ( about 200mm W & H x 100mm thick ) purelly to convert/modify into a water/Air intercooler . my 4x4 is a Lj71 and currently has the stock 2Lt in which will be freshn'ed soon ( new rings & seals/gaskets ), but later this year there'll be a 13BT with twin turbo's under the bonnet . so there'll be bugger all room for a large front mount cooler .

Wondering if anyone has built a water/air intercooler or know of anyone who has ? how did they go ?

i have seen the subaru one on trademe a few times , i think they lack air flow . I bought one , actually won the bid a few days ago and paid for it , just waiting for it to get here , only cost $25 for it , could have got it for less but kinda wanted it & Auction finished during work hours .came off a late model Nissan silvia . perfect for a water/air modification as its thick and compact & will fit snugly beside engine & battery stand , smakc bang next to the inlet manifild .

I hear the top mount ones , aka : WRX , GTiR , etc you need a body lift to fit them in as theres bugger all space between the bonnet & rocker cover, unless you build the bonnet up a wee bit with an air sccop , seems like alot of work just to fit one . A big cooler out front as alot of people suggest , firstly you need the space out front to fit one ( i dont think i will have once most my mods are done ) and if it sticks out the front a bit , its a possibility damaging it when you go off road , sticks , rocks . etc - iuts unlikely but still possible !

I have install an Subaru water/air intercooler to my truck, All I need to do is finish making last bracket. I installed the the radiator on the front it was a pain as I needed to leave room to get to my winch. I had to buy a water pump $180 ish and a friend modified the tank a little to improve flow (air) The unit works VERY well, I purchased a fish tank thermostat with digital display and taped probe to center of inlet manifold, max temp on road so far 51d goin down m/way. Off road 56dC. I have installed a 10" fan to radiator for off road cooling tho. Have been given probe That I can install in manifold to see real temp but not expecting it to be too diff.
