Would anyone be interested on a over night Rallywoods trip

Nope, sorry, wrong answer.

If anyone hasnt been there, or gets lost, you can contact me at 021431847 since no one else has put their contact number up.
Shell, do you have anyone to meet you at the gate? I will remind someone to go down (as the rangerover probably wouldnt be able to get back up), but id probably go for the ride

You'll get muddy alright in there if you want.
I am sure your white whale would love to wallow in this little hole.
Took a while to get Mr O out of this one.
Doesn't look that bad, but a Cruiser could not pull him out. In the end we had to hook the Cruiser to a long wheelbase Patrol and use both vehicles as ground anchors so Mr O could winch himself out.
I am definitely heading back in tomorrow. Had a bit of damage in a similar hole as the one above (Jerry's got pictures, which no doubt will appear on here shortly), bent the front bumper like a pretzel and lost the indicator.
Although it is dry and dusty there are still plenty of mudholes to be found.
Not sure if you'll get hold of Turoa because cell phone coverage at the Green Hut where everone is staying is not that great.
But if you are heading in with Jerry he now knows where to go.
It'll be fun, looking forward to tomorrow now

You forgot to mention Mr O's broken rear diff
, did that slip your mind perhaps?
New one was almost fitted when I left, only took 2 hours.......shoulld I mention that we used the Zuk to get the replacement part?
Oops and he killed the solenoid on the Winch as well...
That hole above is the same one that MarkR towed Mr O's Zuk backwards

No I didn't forget.

I knew you'd get great pleasure out of it. So I thought I'd leave it for you.
Who did you get the replacement off? So Mr O is all set again for tomorrow.
Pretty hard to break anything in the Zuk if it never gets dirty. I reckon we should get your Zuk stuck in some of those bogs tomorrow and see how it fares.

Got any of those pics up on line yet?
Are you going back in about lunchtime tomorrow?
Wacko figured out pretty quick there was something wrong with Mr O's truck. He saw us coming over the Haywards and was wondering why James was in your wagon.

What time are you thinking Markr?
At this stage I think there is just one group meeting at midday but I am pretty sure the gate will be open the whole time. Hardest part might be finding the other group if you just drive in.

How many 4wd'ers does it take to change a diffhead???
The offending parts...the hole where the broken pin sits in was a bit worn, a common problem on these diffs apparantly
Cloggy flying up a hill
Bubba
Redzuki being recovered by Mr O
Turoa getting a tow
Nice L plates Tu
took you long enough to spot them
Cloggy got a bit stuck
So Mr O came down and rescued him
When he took of slowly back up the hill thats when the diff broke
Quick roadside fix ie pull out the shafts...scarily Cloggy has this down to 15 mins
Replacing the diffhead at back at the hutt

Bit of a buggar the broken diff!! But you need to keep in mind that bigger tyres = more (lots more) stress and load for the axles and diff. Thats why I run 32's that are comparativley skinny. ALthough i have managed to break my diff once (touch wood). People forget that the original design was not for hughmongeous tyres. Simple laws of pyhsics here. If you run hugmongeous tyres you need to beef up whatever they are being driven by.
Old school thought is that skinny grippy tyres are better in mud anyway.
If you ever watch events like Camel Trophy (which is sadly no more - taken over by the greenies) you will notice how skinny the tyres are that they use.
I would say that Mr. O's problem was caused earlier on and not by towing someone up the hill - that would have been the last straw.
I remember in my old Landy I was rescueing someone from a hole and manged to get very crossed up getting to them and broke an axle. Replaced that but a couple of moths later the diff broke, probably because of the previous damage.
Good on you Mr O, you got going again!!
Cheers,
John

yea its a bit of a bugger, but nothing $200 couldn't fix
.....any way a list of things that went wrong for me (good learning curve for me in getting to know the landy)
*the rear diff blew
*blew the winch solnoid
*bent the track rod.....twice
*bent the steering rod
this means that:
*im going to put sailsbury diffs in it
*replace the winch solnoid
*get the track rod straightend or a new one and then beef it up
*bent the steering rod back and beef it up
i also did a bit of damage to the body.....but that is to be expected
i have a few pics but my phone has gone flat i will post them up later
cheers for the great trip guys i had fun and learn't alot!!!

You need to put a bar underneath at least to catch all the nasties before they hi the steering rods!! i have one on the Rangie and the next step is to add a plate to it.
Salisburys..ok if you can get them! just put smaller tyres on!!
$200 for a diff head? someone ripping you off there!! I've never paid more than $150. In fact I got 2 for free once!! Still got one left!!
A donor vehilce is also a good answer, get an old or crashed one with good running gear and your away.
Mate of mine has a couple of old pajeros in his backyard and he just keep s robbing parts everytime he breaks something or wears something out.
An old rangie would be good for your as far as running gear goes.
But...your not having mine!!
Ah...its all good fun...until you break something!!

Yep, don't let the weekends events get you down to much if at all.
Teething problems only, all of which are relatively easily fixed.
The bent steering rod could have been avoided, just a moment of inattention. But to prevent this just put a bar in front like I have done. Keeps all the steering bits in front of the diff protected. This is an afternoon's work and would cost next to nothing, all you need is about 1.2 mtrs of 50x50 box.
The trackrod is a design mistake. If you are going to get one made get one with a kink in it to keep it out of harms way. Brian Howatt can make one of these for you. There is a reason yours bent twice. The first time you might have hooked on something. But with our bush repair there was no chance of getting it perfectly straight again. The large tyres you are running and probably more importantly, the large outwards off set on the wheels puts a large strain on the rod especially under conditions when it bent the second time, under hard brakes down a steep hill.
If I where you I'd try and find some standard steel Disco wheels and sell the 8 spokes to some unsuspecting poor soul on TradeMe. Jules Lee at TwoOffroad in Auckland sell the Disco rims for $50.00 each.
The diff is easily strengthened by fitting a Salisbury as you say. But finding one at a reasonable price might prove more difficult. Other options are fitting Hilux diff centres ($200-S300) and getting Howatt to make you some bullet proof axles ($300). One other reasonable cost effective way to strenghten it is to find a 4 pinion out of a LR 90 on which they were an optional extra.

Well I had fun. Drove around a bit, I thrashed Bubba's zuk a bit, and blew a transfer case
.
Unfortunately, there arent any pics of me being stuck in the river, or of "gay pride" written on the side of Mr O's disco
