smoking 2.8

Post by timo »

Hi all,
I have a ln106 d/cab 2.8, recoed 40000 kms ago with a s/h ct20 turbo fitted about 20000 kms ago,
problem is it has started smoking-lots of white smoke at low revs with not much load on engine, i.e slow offroading, changing to blue smoke as revs increase, however with lots of revs/ high load on engine, i.e accelerating to highway speeds/hard offroading/ cruising on open road, engine does not smoke apart from some black with heavy acceleration.
My thoughts,- turbo oil seals worn out, or rings throwing in the towel, was initially running high boost when turbo installed- 14p.s.i , now 9p.s.i after I installed a boost gauge and found what it was running
engine starts and runs fine, does not use significant oil.

Any ideas/thoughts/experience would be much appreciated!
thanks,
Tim

White smoke is not a good sign, are you using any water at all?

Yeah white smoke is usually head gasket.

If the only issues are the smoking/fuming and it's not using oil or water then I don't know if you have an issue do you?

Hope someone else can help you.

when you turn key off does it stop like normal or does it run on (motor keep going). if so oil rings . if smoke a bit blue/white pull turbo hose off between turbo and motor intake and check oil in pipe . If you think it could be a head gasket go to radiator shop they can pressure test . cheap as .

cheers for the replys guys
motor does not run on
oil is seeping out of turbo through wastegate actuator shaft, oiling up the lower heat sheild and dripping onto oil filter below it
Im starting to think turbo, will remove intake piping and have a look
Thanks

Check the breather from the valve cover if the engine is starting to breathe heavily it will blow oil out of the breather into the intake pipe.
Run the breather into a catch bottle and see if it helps, also get the injector pump timing checked unburnt diesel is also white.

White smoke generally indicates overly lean running in a diesel. I get a puff of white on startup as my primer pump is stuffed allowing fuel to run back into the tank starving the engine.

White steam is cracked head/gasket or similar.

Does the exhaust smell of Anti Freeze?

When my first head went I took it to the garage and they said how do you know... so I did this:

Get a mug and hold it over the exhaust to collect the steam. Have a whiff, you'll know whether its antifreeze.
