CV boots replaced

Post by Allan »

Well I got the boots on OK. Wasn't too bad a job. Thanks for the info as it made the job go relatively smoothly. Had them out and in again on the Friday. I didn't even have any trouble getting the ball joint off the spline as they slid off with only a minimum of persuasion. So I should be all ready for the next trip.

CV boot replacement

Post by Newby »

Hi there, I also managed to get the new cv boot on, only I found that I had to remove the front shockabsorber before loosening the 5 bolts securing the drive shaft, this gave me lots more space in to get to the 5 bolts. Man, they were tight as ever...but I won in the end !!! :)

Thanks for the heads up on 'how too'

Epilogue to CV boot job:

Post by Allan »

When I did the inner boots last month I put a small hole in the outer boot on the RHS reinstalling the axle. Hoped that it would last, but alas no such luck. Started spraying grease up the inside of the wheel well. :(
So there I was underneath again on the weekend changing out the outer boot. I used one of those super flexible Duraboots that I got from Butlers in ChCh - after many phone calls around the town. After I got the Axle out, I used the cone they kindly lent me to slide the new boot over the joint without having to dissassenble it. :D
Worked a treat. Now to see if it will last the abuse of off roading. :?:

I got mine from Butlers on Stanmore rd ChCh for $20, and they lent me the cone to install it. Same price as I paid for the inner boot.
As I said I have installed new boots on the inners and RHS outer joints, and by far the DuraBoot was the easier of them. I don't think that I could've done the outer using a normal boot, because as I understand it, you can't seperate the outer joint on the Terrano. (I didn't want to redo the inner one just to get to the outer.) If anyone knows how to seperate the outer CV that would be handy info.
Goto http://www.bailcast.com/duraboot.htm for more info. or call Butlers 03-389 8845
Yes, they are flexible. The 25mm small end stretches to 95mm to go over the cone when you install it. Looks freaky, but didn't tear. You have to push like anything, but it does go over. Hope that answers your Q's.
Cheers
Al
