to the land of the fj40 unknown

Post by gimmemud »

found a 78 fj40 on trademe needs lots of body work but comes with some new panels and some fiberglass ones and mint chassis, everything there to finish the job.
i saw the ad and thought sure i know how to bog and ive seen how well they perform, so went for a test drive round the guys land and engine went like a dream and i was in love.

Fun stuff:
Engine pooed its pants on the way home and didnt start again
needs lots of welding, grinding and bog + paint
could do with a lift.

so it sounds like project time.
Any segestions would be appreciated

Listing was
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... d=86311789
if you wanna see it

p.s. need a welder so if anyone local wants to sell a cheap working mig would be keen

congratulations mate, if its the 2F engine they are a very very very simple motor and are easy to keep running in good tune, heaps of pull and hard to kill...ive tryed to kill mine and it just wont die.

Another fan here for the old 40 with the 2F. I agree with wopass - the 2F is simple to work on & a great offroad motor - never gives up - it'll keep pulling from idle - better torque than most diesels. Well worth the effort to get it in tune - and will run reasonably quiet if you get the valves adjusted nicely. What's the symptoms? If it just died - it's likely a fuel issue. Regarding mods - it really does depend what you want with it. Check out ih8mud.com lots of advice there - but be aware the Yanks are into big lifts & big tyres for rock-crawling so some advice might not be right for NZ conditions (and cert requirements). I stuck to a low budget mild lift with re-tempered springs & and new full length leaf with longer shackles on the rear - then pulled a short leaf from each pack. Slightly longer travel shocks & I'm pretty happy with the result - it fits 33in tyres comfortably & I've had 35's on with only a little rubbing at full articulation. Or you can take it a lot further with a spring-over if you have the skills (or cash) - wopass seems to be the man for advice if you go that far. A lockrite in the back is also a good investment at around $500. Disc brakes in the front is well worthwhile & pretty simple to do. It's a really tough, reliable truck which is more capable than most without major modification. Have fun with it!

I like the "used to pass WOF well" comment - that's like one of my morris minors I stripped and sold the chassis and rusted cab for $10. That also used to pass WOF well but it was about 35 years ago it did that!

regardless, hope all goes well with the project

Hey man, its a pitty you didn`t get that tub off me. Its in way better nik than that beastie

Reckon you keep an eye out for a whole replacement tub rather than try and fix that one up.

You got it for a steal though - $355 for a running FJ40 - nice work. 8)

Will be watching your build - You'll have to come over and kick my arse if I get too far behind

Can't get a WOF with plywood doors - and would prefer not to have to take them off when going for one. - Sorry for the off topic Gimmemud.

I'd still have a think about it. If you put a cab on like this you could be fully covered from the mud and still make up an Ali tray for the rear of the chassis with big wheel arch's (heaps of room to articulate)

Was thinking about doing this myself - Have you seen the truck Gertrude? This is pretty much was he has achieved. Will look for pick for you

any good to ya?

thats got to be a lot cheaper than repairing a rusty old tub

I priced a full cab for my last FJ45 5-6 years ago and that was about $4.5k, can't remember if that included gst or not?

regretably the FJ45 expired RIP
