Factory diff lock nissan
I have a factory diff lock off 93 patrol I have put this into a 1990 Safari need to understand how the vacum work if anyone could help.
This thread has info on a factory diff lock swap

Vacuum is taken from the back of the alternator, there should be vacuum tanks up the back courner passenger side of your engine bay. These tanks supply the vacuum to the locker via solenoids mounted on the firewall.

Not sure on what you are asking in regards to how it functions when locked in. The diaphragm on your diff engages the dog teeth via a linkage, locking so both wheels drive at the same speed.
Solenoids are replaceable, I use Mitsubishi solenoids on mine, the are faster to engage and dis-engage. Sorry I do not have a part number. If you search on outerlimits there is a thread which gives you a part number for some solenoids which are quicker than the factory ones.
I think DaveM has had to replace the solenoids so you could ask him where he got them.

Although I haven't replaced my solenoids yet (turns out the loom wasn't wired right at the factory), I will be getting a Mac valve replacement.
I'm pretty sure these are the guys that do the solenoids here
http://www.macvalves.co.nz/index.html, just need to check they are 24v, not 12v, they were $150 from memory, but I'm sure you only need one, and it needs to be hooked up backwards ie vacuum from engine to the exhaust port of the valve, A and B ports to the diff lock actuator and a silencer / filter on the pressure port to keep thr crap out.
Part number 45A-GCI-DDBA-13A but again, check voltage.
