I've got a 40 rear diff here, complete drum to drum. Two problems with these diffs in a Disco though, too narrow if you just want to bolt it in as is, the diff centre itself is too large if you want to fit it inside your LR housing. You'll need the 8" Hilux type heads. According to Howatt, 2 pinion only marginally stronger than LR Banjo (i.e. you or I will break it), 4 pinion the way to go, but even then he re-inforced the bearing caps on the ones in his RR as the carrier bearings are apparently a little on the small side.
Go the the Nissan GQ front and Land Cruiser 80 rear (or Salisbury rear and 4 pinion Hilux in the front)
1992 Land Rover Discovery V8i, 5 speed, 12000lbs winch, Salisbury rear, 110 front, 65mm spring lift, dents in every panel, Rallywoods pinstriping.
No no cloggy, we are talking slicing the 2 housings in 2, and putting the cruiser housing diff holder thingymajig onto the LR housing. The guy who had a bobtailed rangerover at one of the rallywoods trips we did had done this.
That would work. Did this many years ago in my HQ, put a Ford 9" head mated to the HQ axles. Worked a treat as axles etc where the right size and spline.
Also have a 40 complete front axle here Mr O, the head is a little rusty though but some of Pedro's magical rust remover might fix this.
I was going to run these in my Series 1.
