DOC Conservation Management Strategies ( CMS )

A DOC "CMS" is the 10 year plan that DOC conservancies work to and many are coming up to their first review.

The Northland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty and East Coast/ Hawkes Bay conservancies are in the initial consultation stages.

To demonstrate the interest of 4x4 recreation in the planning process it would be good to have plenty of four wheelers contact the relevant DOC offices and ask to be kept informed. You don't have to live in a conservancy to have input.

The 42 Traverse issue is a consequence of the Tongariro / Taupo CMS that set out that there should be no recreational vehicle use of DOC lands in that conservancy. It took five years to challenge that ruling to get one trail.

This time around we should be better prepared and informed....it is certain that our opponents will be!

If you have easy access contact details and what we should say you may get a better response.... Im going off past participation too input into these sort of issues. If its as easy as "click" "enter" "yes" you should get a good response, if its too involved then people turn a blind eye - me included .

I'd like to be able to do everything people ask but if they get everything done for them it will never end!

If some people are looking for a 4x4 part they will search endlessly but when it comes to being able to eventually use that part, they don't worry.

How did I find out about these DOC matters?... I went to their website http://www.doc.govt.nz and looked under consultation. I then sent a short email to the relevant conservancy asking to be kept informed about the consultation process for the CMS review. You see, four wheeling still has an element of DIY.

purely a post for others. My last year of 4wding was 5 rounds of interclub trialling and 2 private runs on farms who I knew the owners. May sound a little naive (sp?) but I expect my next few years too follow the same pattern - and beyond. Granted private access will soon be restiricted with the growing OSH laws, but my previous post was for those that dont know the diminshing "freedom" we/they have"
