JTop V6 3.0 stalls

Post by mytronic »

Hi all
This problem has only just started, coincidentally after I replaced the Battery :? When cold I can pull up-to an intersection and the revs drop to zero, bounce to 500-rpm then back to zero and then stall. Or if at a stop I turn the steering hard round the engine will stall. Have replaced spark plugs, leads and checked timing. A friend of mine mentioned resetting the computer .... How????. Look forward to thoughts on this one

Cheers Mike

What year / model ?

The ecu's can have a bit of a problem with the capacitors on the board failing.
Can cause all sorts of intermittent probs.
Do a google search on it or try here http://www.tmo.com/howto/ecu1g/caps.htm

A company on trademe does a repair service for $150 bucks I think.

some one else may have another idea, this is only one possibility

Hi Matt

Mine is a 1993 JTop Pajero ,rather well used :!: :!:
Fortunately I have a spare computer to try.
Will wait until I get it back from the mechanic for the idler arm repair as posted. Repairs, repairs. My Cherokee was more robust :D
But I do so love my JTop

:D :D Thought that would invoke the ire of fellow members. Never broke anything on my jeep, it just wore out... hahaha. On that note I also burst a brake line in the weekend while being used as a winch point for a cruiser that had got bogged up-to it's sills (35" Tires and body lift !!), nothing that a pair of vicegrips couldn't handle.
Will also look into the idler stepper motor, this I do not have as spare

Cheers M :!:

Hi the stepper motor is probably gone on it.When you disconnect the battery the computer loses its memory of the idle setting.Sometime you can get it too relearn by cleaning out the throttle body, disconnecting the battery and reconnecting after a minute.then restart the engine and let idle for 10 minutes. You can test the stepper motor with a multi meter.Measure the resistance between the centre pin and outer pins on the stepper motor, should be around 35 ohms.Measure when hot because quite often the resistance goes out of spec. You can get them rebuilt.

Hi All

An Update

Removed the Idler Stepper Motor as suggested, cleaned all the carbon deposits, refitted and all OK problem fixed.

Thanks for the help Guys and Gals , steered me in the correct direction
