yea its all set up for the cruiser transplant, i havent measured it yet but i have the same thought sadam, looks a long unit.....

would like to stick to the auto, has the 400t trans(i think)and they are a pretty strong unit from what i hear, and autos are suposed to be good for offroading so i want to try it, just have to be carefull when goin down hills that it doesnt run away from me :o

and from what i can remember the 4 barrel holleys can be made to run on big angles with a little modding.

so here starts the project, bound to be lots of hiccups in the way as i can allready see a few.

I've got a standard 600 holley on mine and was a bit worried about flooding when I did the swap-out, my mate got me to hook up the return to tank line to cope with the high volume of fuel being supplied when the floats are off angle and so far although I try to avoid high angle situations I've don't seem to have any sort of problems? :D

The only others things I found with the conversion is the chevs run pretty hot which mates a radiator upgrade worthwhile, my fan is 200mm from the radiator and keeps relatively cool, on a stinking hot day grinding up hill in low range for a long sustained period it will come to about 2/3 on the temp gauge, rest of the time its between the bottom of the gauge and 1/3. Because of the distance between the fan and radiator if I run it without a shroud the tempature just sky-rockets and overheats. The other thing I find is the chev power steer pumps dont seem to like operating at low revs down at the stall point and make's the steering a bit on the heavy side :?

Keep us posted Wopass. I have a 283 chev sitting next to my FJ40 that will get put together when time allows. So I will be real interested in hearing about the hick ups. Also dont holley make a 4x4 carb now? I think itis called the truck dominator. Designed for the various angles encounted during 4 wheeling.

I'm a little sad on this one. Mate told me about it and I was going to buy but Wopass got into it first. OK, I understand - the missle will ROAR now!

Anyhow... Got something on the go for my 40 - hopefully it all pans out

Nice one Ben - Poor nature - is going to get thrashed now

have found out that my carb is a 600 so that info is good thanks sadam, as for the powersteer pump, im going to have to make a bracket to hang one off it and use an 80 series pump and powersteer box if i can get one at a good price, the surf unit i have at present is ok but a little under powered for moving the 36's so will do the steering upgrade while im doing the engine upgrade.what else do i need to upgrade while im doin it..... might get it all certed when finished so will do everything at the same time :o

as for the engine, had it firing on the floor thismorning :D cant get it to run tho as i think either the fuel pump or the carb is bung  but it fired ! so thats good.

I think the only other thing I was told to do with mine was to tack the pickup onto the oil pump as they are only a press fit and have been known to drop off.... my mate had skids 350 sitting on his bench getting a new crank after his pickup dropped out

I found the whole swapout easy to do with my limited skills and relied on some good advice from the guru's

There are lots of little (and not so little) things to do to a small block to make reliable horsepower, oil pickup is just one. Great motors, ran one in the boat for years, vitually stock, 500+hp, 6500rpm, 110mph, now I have a Nissan, go figure.

with my truck i dont really care about getting heaps of grunt out of it as long as it gets me home im happy. and big HP engines tend to be a little unreliable so ill keep it pretty much stock...except the ZAUST !

chev transplant

Post by andrew007 »

gidday wopass,i had a 40 with a 350 in it & 35" tires. I ran a 40 series desiel 4core radiator with cowling around it with no ova heat probs & steel chev fan. Also a uprated oil pump, isky hi torque low rpm cam,hei dist, eagle leads as didn't loose cyclinders in deep water crossings. They have a really good spark plug cap abit like ur ktm.Holley carb with a holley offroad kit installed.Sydenham chev spares imports these;they have different needle & seat ,bowl vent etc. Have had truck near vertical with no probs.Hopefully this helps you out.

Sarahs old man has a big work shop and a fork lift...............

Although, Dixie's work has a big shop and even better toys for pulling motors out................. :P

Think my old man might have an old engine crane kicking around that we used to put the diesel engine into the S3 landy. Will ask him. Might be sitting in a hedge some where so it might be buggered
