rust fix on yellow supra surf

Post by monaro427 »

well all settled up here in the bay of plenty so i thought i mite started to fix a few things on the wof checklist most of the stuff is pretty basic, but i thought i mite stat with the rust that was uder the fibre glass flares that i had on there.Image
this is the before shot rust all around the arch, the other side had a lot more than this side,Image
i have taken out 3 inches and will cut the inner guard and try to bend it up and mig it together, if that fails will buy some steel sheet and make a new inner guard, have read how to do this on the pirate 4x4 site, not that great with the mig welder but i will pratice first before i start on my panels, check out the lovely big shed i get to park my truck in,Image
i have a few other things like the wiper seals on the front and other little stuff

I haven't seen the Pirate site you are tralking about Craig, but I needed some extra room in the gaurds to slip the 39.5's in. Just took a stab in the dark at the size and drew a line around the existing flare. Made the cut about 10mm further out so I could fold the excess in with some vice grips. This makes the edge you are welding too a bit thicker and it stiffens up the sheet metal itself.
You need to fold out the inner gaurd so it is flat, so some cuts are needed. I think I needed to cut the inner gaurd 3 times. Then just work your way around pushing the inner gaurd and the outer skin togerher and tack as you go. I found a bit of 40mm pipe using the chassis as a leverage point the easiest way to do this.

Ramping the wreck so I knew how much to chop out of the way. The outer skin has been cut here, and the some of the inner gaurd has gone too
Image

Finished deal, well amost. I still have to make some 100mm wide flares to cover the tyres (will be forming these with 25mm box section that has been roll formed)

well got all the inner guard cut and now it just needs a new inner guard made for it, gives me a lot of clearence between the tyre and top of the guard, once all this has been fixed up i will be looking at bobbing the bed and yes i have been reading more info on it from pirate so that will be my next little project should be fun besides that i get to tick two more things of my checklist bloody truck, i just want to be out there wheeling, thompsons track looks good, haven't been able to go out with the ore guys up here yet busy between family stuff and truck, but heres a photo of the end result

yer i will shorten that as well found an article off pirate as well on how to cut it and take out the side windows so in total when i do it i will probably take out hopefully 9 inch's. it shows me how to cut the window frame as well so once it is done it should look like it was made to fit glass and all and will try to make the roof quick release so i can take it of when i want :D

an interesting location....would have to be careful when refueling if you had been doing some hot running....might be interesting if you had a spillage.

Fuel does not go in there. My tank is rear mounted (behind the rear axle and right up under the floor).

Looking good Craig :D

don't know what sort of springs are in as they were in there when i brought the truck over five years ago, the front bar was pretty easy to make using the winch mount from trailgear that jafa on here sells, just got the tube bent up at an exhaust shop, the two pieces that hold the top bar are just bent at 90 degrees, pays when you do it to make sure you have your truck at the bender shop so you can go back and fourth to ge the bends sweet, as i had to go from shop to home and back again to get the second bend on the end, if you wish to come check it out and get measurements that should be find,pm me :D
