Landrover winch

Post by Dick »

Hi guys.

Im still just new to this stuff.

I have a series 1 landie, see below, and wish to attach a winch. I dont want to spend much (mainly as i aint got much TO spend - benefits of being a student studying!! haha) and would prefer a pto one (i think??).

Landie has a holden 186 in it.

Any suggestions, advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

to fit a PTO your gearbox (or is it your transfer?) has to have the place to put a shaft in it to run a PTO winch and you would need to find a second hand unit on the likes of trademe. An electric winch would be easier if you dont have this option on you driveline for a PTO go for a electric winch. But beware the cheaper ones aren't that great (you get what you pay for) but in saying this it all depends how much you use the winch... try trademe for both options

Thanks for that. I am pretty sure that i have to get a pto box that attaches to the rear of my g/box, then send a drive shaft to the front to conect to the winch itself.

There are a few factory electric toyota winches on trade me at the mo? do you know if they are any good?

okay then in that case i would suggest something like this:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 212269.htm

its cheap it has good pulling power it has everything you need to set it up on your truck. it looks like from that photo that you have a nice flat platform to mount to you may just need a couple of plates welded on so that you can bolt it on. hope this helps

the quality is not the best (it is a chinese winch) maybe for once in a blue moon it is ok but severe use and using it very weekend you would want to look at a better quality winch. really for you it would either be that or the more reliable quality hand winch.

If your not planning on using the winch to often, then your probably better off with a Tirfor type hand winch. They are more versatile than a PTO or electric winch, as you can attach them to the front, rear or side of your truck. The biggest problem with having an electric winch mounted on the front of your truck is that as you tear through the mud and crap it seeps into the winch motor, then the day you go to use it there is no go. I have made my electric winch detachable, so i can store it in the cab away from the crap, and also made front and rear receivers, so the winch can be attached to either end of my truck.
