Will the g52 do?
Will the g52 do?
Will the g52 box handle a 2jzge conversion?, or should i source an R151?
Out of the G, W and R series boxes the G is the weakest.
I am sure it would handle the power for a while but will eventually fail. It would be cheaper in the long run to get a W or R box from the start and get clutch, bellhousing etc sorted out for it as they would be different from the G series.
There is an R151 on trademe at the moment however the seller wants $750 for it which I think is a touch too much. You can get complete wrecked LN130 diesel Surf's for around a grand, you could part it out and keep the box.
Matt.

The 2JZ conversion we did in Riks truck is pushing through a G52... and killing it slowly (actually I think he swapped it for a W56 recently, but its no better).
The G52 was designed to sit behind such powerhouses as the 3Y 2-litre petrol, the mighty 2L 2.4-litre diesel and bugger all else... there are ways to strengthen them (I believe the G54 was a strengthened version, although I am not sure I've ever seen one - just seen reference to them on the Marlin forum)...
Find an R150 or 151... As Matt said, you should find an R150 fairly easily... but 151's are harder to come by - but have a lower first gear ratio...

I know this flys against opion but I wouldn't worry about getting a special box
I've talked to alot of guys who have played with toy box's locally and read lots about them online, every one will tell you the R box's are stronger but by how much thats all opinion, most on pirate reakon its not by much in fact the popular view is the increase in strength is so marginal that toy drivers would rather run G's or W's as they don't hang down as low... that says that 2"s of rollover clearance is worth more than the strength gain on a rock crawler
What the local petrol heads kept saying is recon what you've got (how old are the bearings in your G box ??) and go with it.... you know the only difference in a G and W series box to do with the internals is the main bearing is 1mm wider on the W thats pretty much it, not certain on an R I haven't bothered to strip one they cost to much
Another thing to consider you know what an R box is gona cost and how hard they are to find, 5speed G's $300, 4speeds
$100-150 and you can drop the 5th gear from your 5speed on there and your good to go
Hell I know of a guy thrashing a steel case 4speed (sposed to be the weakest box came out in the early lux's) behind a lexus block in his lux and its takin everything he's thrown at it... but he did recon it before he bolted it up
Hey steve just out of interest how many K's have those box's on Riks truck done ?? were they recon'ed??
Cheers Reece
