Short answer: Nope, sorry.

If you turn the diff over in the housing it will drive backwards. Thought about this myself for the MU. I'm going to try and pick up a trashed 80-series or prado diff and modify it with Hilux guts.

oh, and the 80-series diff is 8" from memory, and the 40-series is 9"ish, so that won't work either.

You could stuff an 80-series axle complete under your truck, but check with Toyking first I think from memory he said he'd looked at this and done something different due to strength issues - I'm pretty sure the later model 80 front axles had pissy little CVs in them.

yea i thought the rotation would be screwing the other way  , was just having trouble getting my head around it turning the diff over and rotation direction etc, would like to just do the diff head as opposed to the whole housing, if i can get my grubby hands on a high pinion diff head out of an 80 or similar, pop mine out pop the hight pinion head in and done..... yea that easy...

ohh crap, just read your entry properly, is the 80 only 8" ! well thats buggered that idea then

yes steve is correct the 80 serries front is the same as a hilux.

and you could put an 80 serries complete housing etc in the front but it might look a bit silly for the simple reason there 80m.m wider on each side than the 40 serries ,and you want post 93 to get the big cvs(birfs)

if it was me id be sticking with what youve got and use 80 serries outers with some fab here and there.

ive got a mate with 80 serries diffs on his cj5 he got sick of blowing front diffs so we fabbed the frnt and rear housings to suit 40 serries heads : ,hes rapped cos when he blows diffs he can buy x2 40 serries diffs for the same price as half of an 80 serries

spose its my fault for monting in a INJ 454 in his jeep

hi pin

Post by wopass »

i only wanted the high pinion to get the severe angle out of my front drive shaft, everthing else is ok.

its plenty strong enough how it is, it just hammers the U J's a bit, have to replace them every 6mnths or so depending on how much i use it

$20 for a pair of UJ's i think ill keep doing that... untill i make a new drive shaft

cheers for the info guys

Haven't done much 40-series stuff, but why not use a Hilux / 60-series front d-shaft with the double cardan joint at the g-box end and rotate the housing (and counter-rotate the knuckles) to align the UJ?

Its a bit of work, but you must have vibration as well with the types of angles you must have to chew CVs that quick...

Hows the rear d-shaft angles?

angles

the rear i have mounded pointing at the box so no problem there, the front has pretty bad vibes yea,but its only when 4x4'ing so not much of a problem, iv'e thought about cutting the knuckles and rotating the housing but....cant really be arsed  its still working fine so might just leave it,fix it when it breaks  its been like this for about 6-7 years now so  she'll be right :D
