yea you no who you are, you really cool people who made the south coast trip a wicked family fun day out

, and the help @ my place even tho i wasn't there ( yes bubba i'm missing a pink frilly thong :lol:

) was wicked! thank you all so much you all rock and you are all welcome @ my place and out 4x4ing any time :!:

so the trip, photos if any one has any pls post them

8 trucks, yes i took both of mine, i'm so greedy :wink:

went form red rocks gate to terawhiti station, most of red rocks was pretty standard coast stuff you know a few rocks, some sandy stuff, bit of shingle, some seals, other trucks :lol:

( i still get funny looks driving mitara) then we got to the eva changing cave bay :!:

dun dun dun dunnnnn............but we all made it through with me hitting a rock n freacking out about nearly tiping her into the tide and bubba thinking he'd do the same just a little further up :roll:

the rest of the trip around was standard coasty type stuff, terawhiti station we drove up the river bed to the oval where we played in the bogs and on the hill climb had lunch and talked shit, as you do when out 4x4ing
and nice young man with a swb cruiser threw his fan blade through his radiator so the men did repairs while us lady's talked more shit and jerry looked after the kids ( 7 of them ) :lol:

then young jerry procceded to throw mud in my dreads so i paid him back then ran away and ha ha ha i can run further and faster then jerry ( ya the treadmill is paying off ) we headed back out the coast to my wee beach house and had a BBQ which rocked :wink:

After last weekends play at Terawhiti I thought it be handy to have a map of the area to help us get where we want to go, mark points of interest i.e. mudbogs, picnic spots, mudbogs, viewpoints, mudbogs and other interesting locations - did I mention mudbogs?
Anyway, this is the progress to date:

Lots more work to be done, still more tracks to be added and things such as giving names to locations (will need some help here), adding a bit of colour by adding vegetation, building and structures, rivers and streams etc.
Thinking of making the map routable so if you have a Garmin GPS that supports this feature you will be able to use this.
As you can see the map covers the whole area from Happy Valley road all the way around the coast to Plastic Bay. That is more than just Terawhiti but I thought I'd be handy to have the neighbouring property (owned by Steve Watson??, can someone verify?) in there as well as sometimes CCVC etc get access there too.

My only concern would be that it would encourage even more people to go into Terawhiti without permission which would jepordise land access, perhaps we keep this seperate ie a Red Rocks one and a Terawhiti one, I would be very keen to put clearly the NO GO area's ie dunes etc, and the protected grass we need to keep off....

I would encourage the Terawhiti one to be made avaliable for trip leaders etc, we need to bear in mind that it is not our land, we just get permission to use it, Red Rocks is a bit different as its a public road.

Can you put notes in it ie 10k speed limit, all vehicles need a wof & reg, and when its open, and when the high traffic days are...

I don't want to throw eggs at this idea but just trying to avoid potential issues....has anyone got any thoughts on this?

The same would apply to long gully and any other area's that we use.......whether private or administed by a public body.

Topo maps, Tumonz etc covering terawhiti and the roads/tracks are alrerady readily available and have been for as long as anyone can remember so I don't think cloggys map will do much to encourage any more unauthourised access than there already is.

Marking public and private boundaries would be a good educator if anyone knows where they all are

Yep I realise this...you can see where I am coming from and you know the problems Terawhiti have with unauthorised access and the dunes issues at red rocks....

Land access is an ever increasing issue, I don't want ORE to be promoting maps without consulting Terawhiti first, I am happy to take this on board, I have been discussing maps and disclaimers and handouts with Alan. perhaps we develop and supply these and they hand these out when people book, if its publucly avaliable then people might think open season and go in when they feel like (they do now without permission, when this happens this caused major problem for us responsible users, we ie ORE have been denied access on occasions due to this, due to incidents by these people...the station just locks all its gates......to be fair they have been bloody good to us 4wd'ers over the years......and the issue is not just with ORE ...other clubs have reported the same problems as well)

It would be better to keep Red Rocks & Terewhiti seperate. Also some publicy avaliable maps show some private land as public roads which can cause access issues. The same applies to Rallywoods and Aotea Block. these are both private land.

I don't want to get political and stuff but we don't want to pi55 off landowners and councils....if we don't have anywhere to 4wd then we are stuffed.

Land access affects us all........if we see people jepordising this then we need to do something about this.....if you do nothing then we wil get shut out.

Jerry, I understand where you are coming from but, as an example, if you have a look at this Google Map you will see that most of the tracks on the station are marked anyway.

Having a map like this will not make any difference on illegal access, but as Sadam said, by marking boundaries at certain places like Cable Bay that show that you are crossing into private land, etc will be a POSITIVE thing reinforcing what public maps do not show.

Exactly. Perhaps Cloggy could add some simple boundaries to indicate private land and then this map would allow us to teach people what is and is not publicly available. I suspect you are making this into something bigger than it really is... again. :wink:

Sorry Mark I don't agree....its my personal opinion that if its PRIVATE land then we we get the landowners permission first, we risk land access issues otherwise....I have dealt with Alan and other landowners on a number of occasions, I use that experience as my justification.

for the red rocks one there are 2 adjacent landowners that need to check its correct, etc...., if we make avaliable a terawhiti one we need permission from the landowner......

What a load of bollox, why on earth do you need to get permission to make a map from maps that already exist????????? marking tracks on a map is easy. I've done the whole dam south island and asking permission didnt even enter my mind, only when ive gone to drive them. Your just creating unneccessary work and politics jerry. Just let them get on with what they want. This is not a good look restraining people from making maps. If anything the maps will educate people on what tracks are on private land and what arnt.

I understand your concerns Jerry, you raise some valid points. But I think you are also over reacting a little.
The idea is to make a simple map to assist navigating across sometimes challenging terrain. When being used by private individuals for their own private use there should be no issues with wether the mapped terrain is private or public. This all changes if the maps of private property are actively promoted or sold. If I was a land owner I wouldn't want someone doing that without my knowledge, fair enough. But that is/was not my intention. With this being a public forum it could be assumed that this is what I am doing. If so, my mistake. I'll withdraw any reference wether express or implied that this map is/was going to be publicly published.
The idea was too maybe pass the map on to a few select individuals. Those individuals would need to possess a mapping capable Garmin GPS for these maps to work. It would not be a paper map to be handed out willy-nilly to just anybody.
In the meantime I will plod along and continue developing this map for my own private use. I will take some the good ideas mentioned in the thread so far aboard and include them in the map.

Make the maps, The point I was making was that I was suggesting that they are checked first before being released in any way, shape or form publicy, don't forget the dunes around red rocks that are on Long Gully and WCC land and are private land, do you know where the Terawhiti land and long gully land starts?, do you know which area's of Terawhiti that Alan wants us using / keeping off? can you confirm that he is happy for us to use all the listed bogs ...I can arrange a meeting when you are ready to assist with this?

I wouldn't normally bother but but Red Rocks is very contraversal at the moment, similarly there have been loads of issues re access in Terawhiti which have affected us. We can't afford any potential issues in these area's ..... The implication was that it would be "made avaliable" which I am assuming posting on the forum, I'm not saying that we can't do it...I'm saying that we should get it checked by all the affected landowners and stakeholders before releasing it.....especially if its going to be included in the NZ Open GPS Network maps.

We perhaps need a seperate GPS section on ORE as more and more places will be mapped and its somewhere to to put them.

As I said earlier I am happy to assist getting the boundries and where we can and can't go and help you liase with the landowners. I don't see getting thier buy in and support hard...it just needs to be handled properly. then we can make it avaliable to everyone.
