Internal beadlocks

Post by Madaz »

Is any one running Second Air or Staun internal beadlocks?
Just interested in opinons or feed back from people that are actually using them ,not just trying to sell them.

Tim,
Have a yarn with Sam. He ran the Stauns at Norwest and is pretty happy with them, so no-doubt will be running them at SuperWinch too.

because you get crap in the beads with tubes  .

I was getting stuff in the beads at 12psi with 32" bfg muds.

I got mud in my bfgs at 30psi
Would've thought that the Staun etc would have the advantage of locking inner and outer beads?

Not sure, just seen people pop the inner beads on mechanical bead locks before, so assume they only work on the outside?

Don't know if he's started making them yet, but Rick at 4wd Accessories has made some prototypes... give him a call... he knows all about them and they'll be as good as and cheaper than anything else.

I was going to run them in my truck, but no need for what I do.

And with these you can happily run the tyre itself at 0psi with no issues...

Yes, the stauns lock both inner and outer, and the mechanicals only lock the outer. But the only time I have ever seen an inner bead pop off was on tv, and that was because they ripped the valve stem off

go mechanical locks... unless they have really beefed up the previous designs..

heavy tubes still have valve stems torn off them when the tyre spins...
ive nearly bought shares in tube companies.. eg should have bought mech's long time ago.. tore another yesterday.

stick to mech bead locks i saw two staun ones explode at nelson over easter and they are a pain in the arse to fit .do you really need bead locks? mine mech ones are a pain in the arse on the road (wheels wobble all over the place )great if you only go of road i let mine down to 5 on the front and 3 on the back for serious shit flinging .funny as hell to watch in the rear view mirror when A framing as well, looks like its possessed going down the road

I think he means the tyre spinning on the rim (due too low pressure), once the tyre spins the tube spins with it and the valve stems get cleanly sliced at the hole.

I wouldnt be so concerned about locking the inner bead, very rarely does that get pressure exerted on the like the outer bead does.

I had a set of second air beadlocks on my Nissan when i went down and did the coast 2 coast,In my opinion they were the biggest load of crap ive used,Every day i was pulling of tyres and cleaning the crap out we trid everything includeing running the second air tubes at 50psi plus but every morning would wake up to at least 1 flat tyre,I now use Swages beadlocks and even with badley bent rims they havnt let go...Cheers

Nissans seem to have a problem with the internal beadlocks, Probably something to do with their weight & width. We all know Nissans are like that big bloke propped up by the dart board at the pub. Also there's to many ruts around made peaple in Suk Tonka toys.

I don't think internal beadlocks would stop a tyre spinning on a rim. They would stop it pealing off though. I have f$@#*d an external beadlock rockhopping but then they took alot of punishment though  I am thnking of going with internal beadlocks as they don't need certing and I peel tyres off rims

i have internal staun beadlocks and yes they do let crap in the rim, but they keep the tyre on, they are not perfect but they are cheaper than mechanicals and are good on the road,
i let my simexes down to 8psi in the rear and 10 psi in the front, they work good at keeping the beads on, cleaning the beads is a hassle but its on the list with the other maintenance chores after a thrashing, and tyre is basically tubeless so if you geta puncture it will slowly leak rather than go dead flat like a tubed tyre.
pros and cons with both.

fit a narly set of chains and dont let the tyre down, is another idea, but u cant use chains in comps.

mech locks are on the cheap $250 each , depending on ifit includes rims or not up to $400 each depending on manufacturerand if cert is needed.
there is new internal beadlocks on the market for $600 mark and thats for all 4. have a look in the latest 4x4 action mag.

When i got my mechanicals they cost me $150 each (incl rim) plus my time to clean them up, paint them and fit the tyres.

I run 37's, tubless and unbalanced :o and have not had any problems with leaks or vibrations.
