LN130 Surf bolt on sliders construction
LN130 Surf bolt on sliders construction
I am looking to make a set of bolt on sliders so I don't need get a cert.
From what I have read bolt on's can be strong enough to jack from and protect the sills under most circumstances. I have seen some mounts on trucks in the US on the web and they are just screwed through one side of the chassis rail only.
I was going to have three U shaped mounts per side that enclose three sides of the chassis rail and I was going to drill straight through the chassis and the mounting plates and bolt them on.
I wasn't going to use tubes inside the chassis rails, from what I have seen they don't seem necessary. I wouldn't think the clamping force would need to be massive to still have the strength as the U shape would stop the mount from trying to move around.
I was going to use 3mm plate and get it folded and then use some RHS for the outriggers and main slider using the 3mm plate for gussets where required.
Anyone able to confirm I am on the right track?
Anyone able to suggest someone in the Wellington area who can fold the U brackets for me?
Cheers
Matt.

I think you may want the through tubes, if you leant on the sliders the hole through the chassis can elongate I know the Hilux towbar I had on another vehicle did that.
also it mean's you can do the bolts up without fear of squeezing the box section (you don't know your own strength).
Aside from that photo's of how you attend to attach it would be cool, you have a body lift form memory so are you going over or under the chassis? Also if you go U shaped it would not be hard to weld a top or botton section on to make it a sleeve, this may make them stiffer for sliding on.
Just thought's I havent built any but or bought any yet.

If I put the tubes into the chassis then I will need to get a cert. Cutting or welding on the chassis requires certification I believe.
Another option might be to just screw them in from each side of the chassis so there is no pulling or elongating possible.
I do have a body lift so I could make a top section and weld that on.
Another option might just be to wait for the other mods I have coming, new seats and rear disk brakes and just do it at the same time....

You are on the right track Matt. Use 6mm plate for the C ( U ) section and then just weld your sliders to it. There is no need to drill, weld, or change the chasiss rails in any way what soever.
I doubt there are too many people on this forum who would put sliders through the punishment that I do, and as such they are really strong as any one who has been silly enough to go on a rock mission with me will testify too. They can be used to lift off of easily as well.

Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!
Nope. Nothing but the friction holding them there Mike. But the front ones are close to transfer cross member and front control arm mount.
They have had some good impacts form sliding sideways off rocks into more rocks and from underneath. Also really usefull for laying truck into solid objetcs and pushing the swinging the truck around.
Wondered who would comment on the coach bolts. Shoulda known it would be you Reece
. Better bolts would be good, but the ones on there have done the job, so being a lazy bastard, I just left them there

I was going to run a bead of weld on the bottom arm just about the inside edge of where the chassi sits, help locate and provide a mechanical advantage when taking a hard knock up... but thats just me

got a couple of other ideas as well

Cheers Reece

Yeah I dont think I will. If yours had I might have but I imagine yours would get just a weee bit more abuse than my crud bucket parked up in the shed
Thanks for posting up rok, I think you've given everyone a really good head start on the way to some decent sliders
