Tyre Choices

Post by Jzilla »

Hi

I'm looking for some advice on which tyre to choose....

I drive a 95 Nissan Terrano currently fitted with 265/70x15 winter dueller's.

As this is my "going to work" vehicle I do about 250k's a week on road, my offroading is mainly limited to rivers for trout fishing on the weekends.

Mainly rock but some shingle, sand and mud thrown in for good measure. being new to offroading I'm still at the stage of looking at a hazard and thinking "she'll be right" lets give it a go ''

After a lot of reading on the net, and because price is always a factor, I have come down to two choices: Goodyear atr's or Dunlop at2's

I am leaning towards the Goodyear's but am willing to listen to the voice of experience about which would best suite, maybe even a different tyre altogether.

Thanks for any advice in advance...

have you checked out GT Radials, I've heard nothing but good things about the Savero A/T where I've heard the wrangler atr's get a bit slippery in the wet. check out tyres 4 u web site.

thats the same as 31x10.r/15 you have heaps of options.

I would recommend the bridgestone D694 over any other a/t tyre

don't waste your time with good years or dunslops, you WILL chop the sides out quick smart, plus they are weak in the sides.

oh and make sure you get rid of those dangerous mud and snow crap import tyres.

my experiance with tyres is 6 years working in the industry, doing all sorts from tractor tyres in the snow, to truck tyres at 3am in the cold rain on the desert road.

trust me I do have a clue

i would agree with warlord on the bridgestones, i worked as maintanance manager at the countrys biggest outdoor education for 6 years with 17 vehicles with six of those being 4wds as well as new transits. over the years i tryed just about all at type tyres. bfgs go out of shape before they wear out 25ks,wrangler atrs on a hilux that is on road and gravel got 22ks so i got second set cheap as(there must of been a bad batch) said good year got 24ks out of second set, and drove like crap , firestone rvs drove good and got huge milage 50ks but i think they stopped making them so tryed bridgestones thr one before the 674 and they were good in the wet and got good milage 45ks tryed new 674 on same hilux and got 60 ks !! out of them, so even put them on back of transits and have been good . this is in central nth island so windy tarseal and crap roads and ice and snow in winter, the gt radial was like driving on ice in the wet so i havent tryed them since, my $2 worth cheers

I'd put a vote in for the savero M/T I don't run them on my truck only becouse they don't make em big enough for my insecuritys 8) I need big tires to make me feel happy 8)
But I've driven plenty of work trucks both hilux's and vans with them on... they are surprisingly good on wet tarseal I've never had them let go and I don't know of any "resumble" drivers who have
The largest NZ logging contractor (D G Glen) is running them on most of his wagons ( I think its something in excess of 40 wagons  ) and alot of these clock in excess of 500km's a day on everything from skid tracks to national highways, some of these trucks have clocked 50-60k on these and they are right down there in price

 he did, I'm suggesting he look at the savero M/T based on my experiance and what alot of the loggers round here use and it will give him a better performance offroad as well....

the bigger the blinders are the more options you miss out on

well if he's going that way I would suggest looking at the hankook RT01, this is what I run on my suzuki and I've found they are an excellent tyre.

but another suggestion is the hankook z36 a/t they are good but a bit more roadie than mud

Thanks for all the feedback guys, really appreciate it.

I guess I'm looking and a set of D694's or Savero AT plus's

Looking at pictures on the net I noticed they both have similar tread patterns, and based on the recommendations above which ever tyre works out cheapest will be a good choice.

Just waiting on prices for both, am I right in guessing that Tony's Tyres would be the best place to get them? Or is there somewhere better in Napier/Hastings I should be going to?

Thanks again for your help.
