How to insert a URL address?

How does the URL button, on the toolbar above, work?
I somehow managed to insert one on my last post, but it was more by good luck than good management. (CV boots replaced on toolshed)
I must've clicked the button too many times as there is a whole bunch of URL icons at the bottom of my post?
Sorry for the dumb Question, But am still learning these interweb thingies.

Hi Allan, there are (at least) two ways to insert a URL in your post:

First, you can type url in square brackets then the url then /url in square brackets - just make sure you have no spaces in between the two - I've added spaces below to show how it works, then below it done the same without the spaces...
http://www.theurl.com
http://www.theurl.com

Secondly, you can type the url, then highlight it and press the URL button at the top. This will insert the url tags for you automagically.
