Gear Ratios - What should I do...

Post by wjw »

Well the 4.88 C &P's I ordered from the US have arrived, but they are actually 5.29's. Trying to decide what to do as at 100Km's its struggling you can see why below:

Code: Select all

Tyre       Diff      RPM @ 100KM
31"         4.3      2097 - FACTORY
35"         4.3      1858 - CURRENT
35"         4.8      2108
35"         5.29    2285

So do I put the 5.29's in... those of you with 2JZ's what does your motor sound like sitting at about 2300-2500RPM???

I have no tacho so cant play :(

Stop being such a pussy... put em in, sell the 35's and get some 37's... that will fix everything :)

you should notice a huge difference in drivability with them. i changed from 4.3s to 4.8s wity 33inch tyres on my V6 surf and it is so much better to drive on the road now. you have more power and a bigger change.
i reckin you will be happy with them. 2500 doesnt sound that high to me.

HI Bill
I had already formed the opinion that your truck on 35's and the petrol engine should be more lower geared that of the 4.88's.
Think about the two differing torque figures and what revs they are at. I am sure that max torque will be at greater than 2000 RPM.
Even if it wasnt, the rev range of the jz means that the thing will sing up to what 6k? The 1KZ runs out as you know and have tried  at about 3.5 perhaps 4 and definately all over at 4.3k.

GO THE LOW GEARS AND LETS HERE HER SWEET SIX SING. 8)

I haven't taken them out yet, but I'll pm ya when I do.

Rik... your just rough ;-) These are brand new so hopefully they will last. Tim hasn't had trouble with his 5.29's. I'll fit them and see what happens. No point leaving them in the shed now I have them. Just have to avoid doing burnouts and wheel spinning at the lights....

If they die, it'll be onto Prado 4.8's
