Cutting springs

Post by smurf182 »

Just saw a set of cheap 80 series Cruiser springs on Trademe, though seller is unsure if they are standard or lifted.

As i don't particularly want the rear of my surf to go up 6" (I want 2-3"), can springs just be cut down a little?

How much are the coils? Should be able to get a pair of new coils to suit for around $200.
Remember though, you would want to get longer shocks too though for the full benefit.

Yes you can have them reset, no you are not allowed to cut coil springs - although I dare say if brown and cope (Dunedin) or Chamberlains (Chch) shortened them and then re-tempered them it would be ok... you'd need to ask them that...

If you shorten springs you actually increase the stiffness of them. Same spring rate over a shorter piece of steel increases the stiffness.

Best bet is to purchase a set of springs designed for the vehicle and weight so you get a good ride and the correct amount of lift.

Lol yes, I should probably stop trying to cut corners or springs for that matter. The last thing I need is an even stiffer rear end (it bounces around and steps out enough as it is already, happened at 90kays on bumpy off camber bend recently; new underwear required).

Thanks for the info guys.

OME make a soft spring for the Surf's which I have in my Lux. Gave me about 2.5 inches of lift and rides nicely.

No good if you want to do plenty of towing or carrying heavy loads but they flex well and ride nicely.
