Hey Guys

Has any body tried to make their Disco 2WD. The reason I am asking is my V8 is a little thirsty and i suspect being able to pop into 2WD while driving to trips would save me a few $$ in gas. It was mentioned to me about lookiing into installing front hubs.

Has anybody tried this?

There are some articles on the net on how to do it, and you can make it easier by buying some bits of ashcroft?? to do it. That is converting the tansfercase to 2wd. The kit even comes with free wheeling hubs I think

Just putting free-wheeling hubs in the front won't do it. You need to stop the whole front drive train from turning. Freewheeling hubs will disconnect the wheels from the axles but the driveshaft, diff head and axles will still be turning as they are still connected to the output in the gearbox.
This conversion kit that Ashcroft make will probably take care of this by making the centre diff only drive to the rear wheels when unlocked and behave like a fully locked diff when not.
The disadvantage I can see with that is when you would like 4wd but don't want the front and rear locked together (towing a boat of the ramp or driving on icy roads) you can't.
And then you got to weigh up the fuel savings versus the cost of conversion. How long would it take to pay for itself?
One other minor thing, the rear diff in a Disco isn't the strongest. Trying to run a gap in the traffic, a bit too much clutch and rpm, will destroy the rear diff if it has to take all the load.

These were the points I was thinking of mentioning. No idea of the cost of the 2wd conversion, but you may be better off looking at an LPG conversion. $2 - 3K for it. Loose space with the bottle, but pending how much use it gets, may not take long too pay off..
