SJ413 transfer case

Post by luke25 »

I just brought a SJ413. Today I took it to the beach to test it out nothing serious at all. Anyway I was shifting from 4L to 4H at about 5kmh and it made a bit of a grinding sound (not any worse then if you'd missed a shift) and got stuck in neutral. I tried rolling it foward, backward, being aggressive on the stick everything I could think of but it still seems to be in neutral. I had to get towed out. Is my transfer case stuffed? The previous owner claimed that the Tcase had been rebuilt 12 months ago (for what its worth). The gearbox was still spinning the input shaft just fine but the Tcase stick just wouldn't move.

is the shifter really sloppy? If so could be the rubber bush in beneath the shifter ball (sorry not sure of real name) is worn and the shifter is not moving through the proper arc. Best to be stationary when going from lo to hi and back. sounds like the gears are out of wack, try disengaging the front hubs and while someone underneath turns the drive shaft by hand wriggle the shifter, lifting it up slightly also and see if it will move back to Hi.

Might just be a case of persevering and holding your tongue right on this one.

If this doesnt work you might have to remove the boots from the cab and the case and remove the shifter and use a screwdriver or similar to realign everything.

Where are you based maybe someone can help if you cant get it yourself?

Ah well good luck,

Heath

Got it sorted now. That rubber bush you mentioned was all full of crap so I cleaned it put it back together and it was better than ever. I can't believe that a little bit of grit would completly stop the lever moving when I was pushing it as hard as I could but I'm glad that thats all it was. Fixed it with the needle nose pliar on my multi tool and my left sock (It was the only available rag for cleaning the bush).
