Yet another new Chch member

Post by KiwiMoose »

Hi folks,

Been lurking for a while now, thought I'd introduce myself and ask a question of the Nissan loving folks here. I've got me a 1994 Nissan Safari LWB that has a baldish set of 265/70R16 on it and I need to buy some new tyres for it. As it's more the off road and long distance driving machine, I'm looking for some suggestions as to the size I should get (the same or larger while I'm buying - without having to modify anything else) and some ideas as to a good mud tyre. I've been looking at the Buckshot Mudder or the (more expensive!) BFG Mud Terrain for a laugh, but I'm open to suggestions and a good place in Chch to get them.

Cheers

Al

Welcome and just because you don't drive a toyota doesn't mean we won't play nice.

You may want to get two sets of tires, one for towing and long distance heavy loaded stuff and one for off road, offroad tires are great but tend to wear faster and are more slippery on the road, AT's seem to be worse than mud tires as far as slippery goes.

As to size I drive a toyota so cant help

I have gone with 33x12.5xR15 but in Maxxis Buckshot. Have had no problems and am really happy with the performance so far. Great in the mud, and excellent traction on the black top.

Hi & welcome to the group.

  As far as tyre suggestions go....Just for something really different - if you do go down the path of 2 sets of tyres...have a look at some good old fashioned 750x16 crossplys for off-road...with a PT tread. They are similar to a tractor tyre..and I've not seen a tractor stuck
(often - but then they need a BIGGER tractor to pull them out :) )

I was looking at doing exactly this, but unfortunately...the kids got too BIG for the back of the SWB Safari I had..and I moved onto the "cruiser.

A search on Trade Me or the Buy Sell & Exchange can generally locate some of these "older" tyres on split rims - also works as a cheap lift too as they sit a whole lot higher :!: Otherwise checkout TyrePower I think it is - near Blackwell's Engineering (not the COOL HSV yard :D ) or ITS in Christchurch

As far as my experience goes (which is limited) I ran poxy ole Firestone ATX23's on the Safari - without any dramas or getting stuck.

I am now running Maxxis Mudders in both 31" and 33" on the cruiser without any hassels.

Tyres questions are like a whole personal thing - and "horses for courses" scenario ...what works for one...doesn't work for another...same as "what is the best truck?"

Anyway....take the advice from the other more sage-like members - they no-doubt have the experience :study: :silent:

No goodyear wranglers or pirellis in the country. I am buying the new kuhmo's KL71 extreme mud tyres today so will let people know how they go. Personally I think the wranglers are a shit tyre on a heavy truck. Watch those bfg's as well, they can go out of shape in the sidewall after a while. And run two stes as dudues above have said.

the BFG is worth the extra coin, good all round tyre's IMO,I'd go the Goodyear MTR over the buckshot if you wont to save some money,BFG not cheap :( you could try the KL71 which cost even more than the BFG I think?

Rick at 4wdacc has some good deals on KL71 and they will be cheaper then the BFG's. Off the top of my head they will be about $343 incl gst for 33x12.5.

As in the other post i would vote for Wranglers(when they hit the country again) They are great tyre for those who want the best of both worlds. 8)
If you dont want to put in a susp lift then 31's might be the pick.

Thanks for the advise so far. Amazing what a one word typo makes, I was meant to say it's more for the offroad THAN long distance driving - I realise that the two are kinda contrary!

One word does make a difference. I know of 2 Safaris running around very happy with their Silverstone 33's but both are lifted they say these work really well on the heavy truck.

Both these drivers had BFG's previously and they did not wear well on a safari, a lot of people here love them but may be like me in a lighter 4x4.

As far as where to get them one did a deal at the race to the sky and the other got his off trademe, they do not seem to be around much.

Keep in mind without any lift anything over 31" will usually fowl the guards.

To fit 33's as most have suggested you will need 2" lift weather it be body or suspension lift. Id recommend doing a 2" or 3" suspension lift, its easy to do and with it being a lwb it will improve your ramp over angle and will still have relativly good on road manners.

As far as tyres go when we used to run 33's we were very impressed with the GT Radials MT, they clear very well. Only thing to be weary of is there sidewall is not as strong as the wranglers. They are a fair bit cheaper than other brands as well
