Smoke on startup
Smoke on startup
Hi There, my 95 escudo v6 smokes sometimes on startup with a white smoke, only for a few seconds, but its a resonable amount of smoke that comes out. Does anyone know what is causing this? Also, I am not sure if this problem it related, but when I start the engine, it revs at 500rpm with the check engine light on, for a few seconds, then kicks up to normal idle, if the accelerator is applied whilst at the 500rpm, the car stalls, it also wont start if accelerator is applied whilst starting. Your help would be appreciated.
You have condensation in the cylinders... which is normal to a point. If its bad it could mean a failing head gasket which is leaking coolant into the cylinders. Does the smoke smell like coolant? Are you losing coolant? Do you have oily or bubbling coolant? These are all symptoms of head gasket probs...
The cold idle could be related to difficulty firing with non-combustable liquid in the cylinders??
bottom line is you may need to get it checked by a mechanic - they can do a pressure test to check whether the head gasket is knackered...
You can pull the plugs - they should all look the same - if one is noticably different then that is likely to be the site of the leak...

Yep my advice is not to drive it anymore until a professional has a look at it....
What did the plugs look like?

Sounds like you have serious head gasket leak, or a cracked/warped head allowing the coolant to enter the combustion chamber or a leak as mike has said somewhere between the water jacket and the sleeved cylinder. Get the head taken off, the head gasket replaced, check that the head is not warped, and do it before the motor dies. You will know the motor has died when it gives a big white cloud, followed by a blue cloud immediately followed by the engine seizing and the rear wheels locking up and you going backwards into a hedge or something along those lines.
you don't need much water into the cylinder to hydraulic your motor, water doesn't compress real well.
You won't see moisture on the plugs, it gets vapourised under compression and what you see is the steam out the exhaust.
