Can you hear them clicking when you wind in or out?

Can you get easy acces to the 3 power leads on the motor?

yes the winch and bar is currently off the truck. What happened was when i got the truck when you wind in or out it sometimes didnt work and you had tot keep flicking the in or out switch to work or just hold it in the wind in position or the wind out position and wait a while for it to work. then the first time i used it acutally winching it gave a puff of smoke from the leads as I forgot to do up the 3 power leads on the winch properly  and it melted those little plastic cover that got over the connections. and when a guy loooked at it he pointed out that the 3 power cables hadnt been done up and were loose  you can hear clicking now when you try to wind in or out but i dont think its the solinoids??? i tryed again and it winched out but not back in again and then i got nothing but clicking again? :(

OK, 1st test the motor.

Get a set of jumper leads.

Leave the earth lead atttached to the housing of the winch motor and -ve on the battery.

Image

Picture the winch motor as above with A, B, C the poles (3 positives) or bolts.

Get the 1st jumper lead and go from the left hand pole (A) coming out of the motor and the other end to the top of the two poles (B) at the drive end of the motor.

Then attach the 2nd jumper lead to the +ve battery and touch the bottom of the two poles (C) on the drive side of the motor. The motor should go, and due to the current they pull it will give a spark.

That will run one way and to test the motor other way swop B & C over. Put lead between A & C and Get Battery power to B.

Hope this helps. If that works then it is a solinoid issue.
