Surf rear springs wanted

Post by motivated »

anyone got any 4 leaf rear springs they dont want, just wanted for a trailor.

I have purchased an 88 surf that was being wrecked but the x-owner wants the rear springs. As its sitting on my front lawn at the mo I would rather keep it mobile.

Thanks in advance

been there done that... are you going to have an arched chassis rail on the trailer? They sit waaaay too flat when you use them in a trailer and you end up with no suspension... although the one my mate made had springs and shocks in it and was an absolute dream to tow when it was empty... no rattles or bangs, hardly knew it was there...

but i'd recommend shorter more arched packs for a trailer...

Its not for me Steve, its for the guy I got the Surf off of. Personally I dont care if his trailor cant carry 4 very small stones as long as I can keep this vehicle mobile for now, its kinda hard to mow around.

Thanks for the advice anyway, I'll stay away from them for a car transporter.

Sorry, just read your post properly :)

Go with the ones offered above, all you need to do is take 1 or 2 of the leafs out of each pack and you'll have a nice surf-style pack. The spring packs are the same between the 106 Hilux utes and the Surfs... apart from the numbers of leafs...

I wish I had your knowledge Steve in regards to toyotas.

I dont even know what model I have purchased, all I knew was that the price was what I was prepared to pay. Just so you dont think I'm completely stupid, I did only buy it for parts.

I have taken a small gamble that the diesel motor is a runner with good box and transfer. Just need to figure out what is missing, and then how to test motor without the turbo, which I'm told is stuffed.

Rear diff head is gone, but I might try to figure out what ratio the front diff is some time. I'm just collecting parts for what I consider to be a very worth while project.

Thanks for your replies

 thanks for the compliment... the knowledge simply comes from spending too much time playing with them :)

The model you have by the sounds of things is an LN61, with the 2LT engine (2.4 turbo diesel). You can have the engine compression and leakdown tested without the turbo - although they are VERY prone to blowing heads so if the turbo has apparently gone then the head might also have trouble...

The diff ratio will be 4.3 most likely... very common and you can find them in most hiace vans as well...

Feel free to start a project thread, there are plenty of people on here with good working knowledges of these trucks who will be able to help

Steve can you suggest anyone that would do a compression and leakdown test on a vehicle that is not driveable (at my place). Problem with this thing is that I dont know what is missing under bonnet, but should be able to get motor turning over for a test.

And would this test give an indication of the head condition.

No point starting a project using this thing if the motor is already stuffed.

As long as it turns over on the starter motor, you shuld be able to get garth?? at Checkking to come out and do aleak down and compression test. Don't know how much though, used to be about $50 10years or so ago.
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

Just bin out and found another vehicle that might be better suited for the project I have in mind. Its on the road, already has good rubber, tow hooks etc

Was thinking of selling the diesel motor off, previous owner told me it was a good runner but the turbo had dropped dead. I was only thinking of asking about $150 for the motor, test would put it up to $200. Its starting to kill a good deal for some one. I'm guessing $150 would be a good deal ?

Might sell all the parts real cheap yet. Then again I might keep it. Its a bitch not being able to make up your mind about these things due to a lack of knowledge.

Might start a thread in "projects" and see what others think.
