A-Frame no more.

Post by rokhound »

My POS is a real handfull to A-frame. But it sits too high to put on a normal car transporter.

Soooo being a bit of an idiot I thought I would try something else.......

And in place

The trailer is still in concept mode, but basically I can sit the wreck on it as in the pictures. Then all the out riggers that the surf sits on, unclip and I can put on the 3.000m x 1.300 m tipping well side deck, or clip on the out rigger ramps that will turn it into a standard car transporter .
I started out thinking this would be a good liitle project, but after steel, springs and equalisers, brakes, hubs and stubs, mags (yes mags, I am a show pony  ) and decking and paint , I think this little project is going to be close to $2k  .

Ahh well, at least it should look cool.
Will post up more pics as I get the various decks built for it.

That looks very cool ...
I like the dual battery setup :) :)
Real easy to change though could be an issue if you accrlerate too quick and the battery tips back, but then there is those two handy posts sticking up that would catch on the bonnet and stop it falling into the fan.
There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.

wicked idea rok, ive been thinking of something similiar for the LR but I never thought about the height in the bigger tires  Are you going to run a piece across the ends that support the tires to stop them splaying out, give it a bit more strength or even just some flat bar to tie it together.

Yeah i think it will need something along those lines Mike. I had to re-do the outriggers a couple of times before I got the right balance. The trailer frame looks like it will need some stiffner bars as well. But we will get there

Nice idea there rok, just a thought what happens if you've got a flat ?? might pay to put some sort of strap under the bottom, if those out riggers are removable just so, if you do have a flat it can't fall through....

I'm building something similar (sitting out in the yard at the mo  ) tandem with a long drawbar and clip on beaver tail and side and front extentions  never thought about the height thing 8) and mine is on 31" muds  ... hey its gota look the part if its being towed behind a beast

Oh dear me.....

That looks like you spent more than 3 minutes thinking about it... Are you ok? Feeling alright?? Are you sure there's not a river in the middle of nowhere where you could build that????

Cool westy, very cool.

You are dead right Reece. Hadn't even thought about getting a flat  . So yes some, strap under there will be the go, thanks dude.

Goose, hehe when the little stick welder I have got was getting really hot,(the steel is to heavy to weld with fluxcore mig, and it is messy) I was thinking about rounding up the car batteries around the place and running some DC welds.
