Thoughts on Wrangler MT/R's please

Post by 4x4boy »

I'm looking to buy some new tyres. Not sure whether to go with 33's or 35's. Seems the best value for $ is the MT/R's but haven't used them before. I only used Simex and thought I might put the feelers out there to see what you guys think. Any comments would be great either good or bad. 8) :?:

I am now running the new kumho kl71. On a recent trip up worsleys I popped one off a bead ( going to hard) and had to put the wrangler as a spare on. The wrangler would not clear that real sticky mud but the kl71 did at very low revs. there were all types of tyres on that trip and mine were the only ones consistently clearing the tread. Rick at 4wdacc has a very good deal on these at the moment and would highly recommend them to you. Wranglers are going to significantly go up in price when the next shipment comes in and I think the Kumhos will be the cheapest.

Forgot to add, I staked two wranglers on tame terrain, I think they are the worst tyre I have had on a truck.

Sounds like a sales pitch if you ask me, I seem to recall my SAT's not clogging, actually never clogging since ive owned them

I do like the look of those kumos that al talks about. for me it will be between those and mtr's .

Hi MATT, I run KUMHO 833, 35" that measure 34" on the vehicle, this is a good size for the 70# as any bigger makes it a bit high geared for the standard diffs.(H2OLVA runs the same tyres) . These tyres have probable been superseded by now but where avalible because the Trials people could still get them. If you want a true mud tyre you can't go past the big block tyres like Simex, but then we don't 4wheel in mud all the time.
Even the best mud tyres become Slicks in some conditions.

Cheers for your thought guys. I'm thinking that the budget isn't going to stretch to Simex. My next thought is maybe considering Maxxis Mudzillas but could prob only afford to got to a 33" @ $310each as the 35's are $380each. The benefit of the MTR is that the 35's are only $290 and I guess that the best 33 isn't going to do much good if the diffs are hung up on rutts.

Does anyone know of a better deal around town? :?:

Need to get the truck sorted before the next training day. Would be keen to see how it goes. Stock standard prado could be a little embarassing.

Can get the Kumho's in 35, not sure if they are in stock or not though.
I find the MTR is a good all round tyre, so will keep them as an every day tyre, and run something different in 35's, maybe Kumho, depending on what price they are though

Last report I heard was that you could not get 33 or 35 wranglres in NZ. They will not be the same price again. You are right Mike yours were clearing, forgot about that but they were doing a zillion revs . The kumhos can be done for $345 ea. They are a directonal tyre. The 35's come in an 18"-24" rim at present. They will have them in a 15" rim in about 8 months. They are essentially made for the US market hence 18-24"

I've still got a quote for 5 MTR's for $1280 in 35" from Tony's.
They have it on computer so will stick to that price which is good

I have 3 sets of tyres: MTR 35's, 35' TSL Boggers and Simex 35's all have their pros and cons MTR’s for puddling around. TSL’s are only good for straight line stuff as they have very little lateral grip and the Simex for comps, If your used to simex tyres off-road then you will asking a bit much to expect any better from the others theirs no real comparison for performance in the mud.

I have both 33 mtr's and Simex....

I've had the MTR from new. They worked great in all conditions.. VERY high klms on them. Now the tread is down to about 7 ml they don't work quite as well in the mud as they did but I've done over 55,000 klm on them so fare. Very nice onroad as well. If I want to play in mud upto my arse, I use the simex tyres. Tyres were used on a 71 series prado. 1kz engine.

I highly recommend them. They will be replace with the same once they don't pass WOF check.

I run 2 wagons. FJ40 with 33" 833 kumhos which I have found to be great and give me no probs. BJ74 with 33" maxxis mudders, which are also known as buckshot mudders or you can get them from YHI in auckland as a Nankang 889. I find these to be great on my BJ74, but I only do sfari style trips and tow with that truck.
I borrowed a mates 33 x 14" boggers the other week and put them on my FJ40 and played on a muddy farm with them. AWESUM TYRES. they were half worn and ran rings around the other trucks that were there with simex and creepy crawlers. If I won lotto I would race out and order a set tomorrow.
The tyre you choose depends on wot you gonna do with it and wether you wanna drive on the road and if you are allowed to have it stick out the guards or not.
If I had to put a 35" tyre on my BJ74 with 13BT motor, then I would buy the maxxis mudders as they work well off road and perform really well on the road when pushed.
