umm i can see some logic there
that tree would not be taking the full force of the winch
think about it like this if you have a roll of fencing wire how hard is it to pull it tight with one end fixed and you pulling the other end
but if you fix both ends and pull the wire sideways it is alot easier to get the wire tight
similar forces to what is happening in the pic
does that make sense you are all welcome to shoot me down if you disagree

Totally agree with Al, plus - I would also put a rated shackle onto the tree-trunk protector - rather than just slipping the hook into the eyes of the strap/protector
