Well im glad i didnt go over again this year with all the rain they had.

The zuks run what us called a "God Winch" which can aparantly pull them along at 40kph

The winch is nicknamed gods winch overseas particularly maylasia. From my understanding they are often a small car diff pumkin welded up, with an axle out of one side connected to a drum. With diff ratios being around a 4:1 ratio they are incredibly fast. If you know what you are doing you can get your wheels to spin at the same speed as the winch

I would not of thought it would be aloud to compete due to not having a fire wall and the driver and passenger not having fire proof clothes :?

They dont meet regulations but i think there was a bit of leeway due to the distance they travelled. They also only had a 20l fuel tank (they were required to carry enough fuel for 500km) and had a support vehicle following them around which is also a no no as outside assistance is not allowed.

Looks like they have a GT4 celica motor and trans turned sideways!
Very trick and cool winch, you would need a strong cable

Celica gt4 this would be it , but he wouldn't be using the rear output for the rear axle , as the motor is turned side wise , to its normal orientation
Hes running the front drive shafts which normally go to the front wheels , to the front and rear diffs and what would be normally the rear output is running his winch . Same setup as rear engined moon buggys running front wheel drive motor and transaxles the addition here would be the third output running the winch ,

The reason he was on the limiter on the speed sections is these motor boxs have a 4 somthing to one final , so he dosn't have a dual range his basicaly running the same ratio as series 1 rockhopper gearing all the time

who cares if it is legal or not, everyone wants that extra edge, looks like the way of the future to me, in 5 years there will be new ideas/ innovations that will make this look slow, or be on a par but at what price, how many 10s of thousands have gone into that vehicle, or would it be 100s, my guess 100s, but if you want to be a front runner you got to keep up, good on them.

that is some serious left field thinking and quite a cool idea. :D

Personaly I think the speed of the winch would cause serious issues of stress on everything around it it is pretty on or off as far as I can see and very little control.

They made it work but high speed pumps mounted on the PTO shaft to run a hydraulic winch giving you back your control? maybe not all the same speed. It would be interesting to see what happens a Mitsubishi Evo or WRX running 35" tires next year? same engine configuration  now if only I won that lotto.......

I think that winch is the shit, dunno how it would go it some more technical areas, but its certainly fast  heap cheaper than a fast hyd setup for sure

If I find a PTO unit for the back of my T-case I may have to ask god if I can use his winch design

It'd blow any normal PTO box to bits. You need to have the driveline to the winch as beefy as the one to your wheels.

We came up with the same idea during a steinlager fuelled 'strategic planning meeting' at the monster garage a few months back, I guess there's nothing new under the sun... The only slightly tricky bit would be getting a reliable braking system sorted out to comply with winch comp rules.

If it breaks, build it stronger.
If it doesn't break, drive it harder.

Yes thats one advantage to a "normal" PTO winch setup, the worm/worm wheel style is self braking, just need to get enough rpm's into it to speed it up
