Is it better to have LSD's or lockers ?
I have an 89' LJ71 that is a daily driver , currently has a 2LT ( new engine to come )I will be upgrading my diff's soon, for one the rear's worn & keeps doing pinion seals . I was going to get a powetrax "no-slip" in the rear & a 2nd hand Toyota LSD i the front , but have been reading about about Auto lockers & kinda thinking maybe i should go LSD's front & Back . Don't like the back end sliding over rocks , log's , road etc on slippery stuff with a locker , causing damage to the bodywork .
Also by the time you find a good 2nd hand LSD & rebuild it cost's like $600+ , so think i will get the Detroit Truetrac LSD's ( brand New Aftermarket Gear driven LSD carrier ) that cost like $380 US ( each ) + about $70 Air frieght ! aftermarket LSD's are alot better than stock factory units .
what do you reck'n ?

Quite right Nibs.
As most of the weight of a vehicle is being pushed, and not pulled.
I seem to remeber that a rear locker is 70% more efficient than a front one, so if only one is available, then in the back it goes.
I used to run rear locked and front LSD, and I have never broken a front CV in the 'lux. When I went to double lockers, I also put in Chromoly CV's and axles, and still haven't done a CV. (broken damn near everything else though

Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!
When my factory locker craps out in the rear of the safari, I will be putting in a Nissan LSD(better then a toyota one). Once I put the lokka up front, I found I could pull myself out of most of the shit I got stuck in previously without it. Good for pulling yourself up steep river banks. And agree, LSD up front is shiiiit.

thats cos you miss the old nissan days of cv carnage each outing al...

i'd prefer twin locked too, but in a rusty 40 cruiser with 36's on and no power steer, think that'll be the best option for the time being..

auto lockers in the front can lead to steering problems on slippery surfaces with the vehicle tending to sledge ahead when you want to turn.they also tend to increase your turning area.this may not be a problem in most of the areas you drive but on most of our west coast tracks you could have problems. tis is why i changed to the air locker in the front.

Yip, without Longs replacing the standard CVs dont think I'd put a locker in the front just yet.
I've had my LSD head packed up nice and tight ($200 to get the pros onto it) so hopefully it will improve traction.

unless you get custom axles or use other brands cut down & Splined , sounds like a dilemma having auto-lockers in a daily driver from this post , unless you have a selectable locker or even better selectanle lockers that are LSD until you push the button ( Electrac, E-Locker , etc ) drove from Wanaka to turnoff to authors pass & Chch in the pouring rain on sunday & hooned it around corners , etc - can't see myself doing that with a Auto locker in the rear ! maybe will have to go Truetrac LSD's front & back ( they're cheap direct from the US - like $1200NZ including air frieght .

after reading that article they seem like they would not be as good as an auto lokka off road and not alot better on road. they dont lock like a lokka and the driving over the breaks thing that they talk about would be dificut to control unles you had an auto and it would suck power at times when you need it most. the lokkas really arent that bad on the road. and you can easily drive to compensate for them. I only notice them round town and they have never been a problem on the open road. they are great on gravel, they really get the power down and wont cause the truck to slide unless you push it, even when it does its easier to controll than an open diff. If you are building the truck to go off road then i dont think that theses lsds will keep up with the lokkas. for me the advantages strongly out weigh the dissadvantages. As i said before try and drive a truck with lokkas so you can make a fully informed decision.

the LSD's that have the locker function are called Electrac's , made by the same company that makes the detroit locker , but i think they're limited to a few car manufacturer's , Eaton has their own brand to called the E-locker of similar principle , but i think they are similar or slightly more in price to the ARB air lockers .
Are'nt the Lokka brand auto lockers nearly identical to the Powertrax "Lockrites" ? plus there are other similar brands as the lockrites, Lokka's , etc , theirs a simalar brand called the Aussie locker , strangely enough ( contradiction ) , they're not sold in Aussie as asked the rep in the US , plus theres an EZ locker ( detroit ) & others based off the same principle . the only locker similar in design as the lockrite , that is not as harsh & doesn't make that clicking noise is the Powertrax "No Slip " .

This has all been said on here before... as far as im aware all the auto lokkas are the same design just made in different places. those lsd things dont sound that good to me. but i like the idea of the ones that are lsd or locked. best of both worlds. have a read from other posts and listen to what people have to say then make up your mind.

been covered heaps before actually, but still there are people around who think the Lokka , EZ & lockrite are the same as the "No Slip" - which is not the case , the Lokka.lockrite , etc are copys of the original Detroit locker but are slip in without the carrier & the "No slip" is an improvement over that design .
