electric toyota hubs..

Post by rangimotors »

on the weekend during a little play i was having down by the river i came across a stuck surf which wouldn't go into 4wd, seemed the hubs were the problem as i was pulling it out i began to wonder if the ease of pushing a button was worth the risk of loosing 4wd out in the wop-wops, is this a common fault? and is it easy to convert or change them to manual locking hubs? any advice or info would be great thanks

May be worth changing them before they fail...

There are 3 options
(1) Old Blues allen key mod (look at the front page of ORE)
(2) Get some surf beam axle thingys and some manual hubs and convert them
(3) Get an aftermarket spacer kit and some manual hubs

I went for the spacers, pics are here

I went with the hilux/surf hub option as it was the strongest & cheapest, full how-to here:

If it breaks, build it stronger.
If it doesn't break, drive it harder.
