opinions on a suitable Light wieght Toyota engine for a ....
Maybe this is a stupid post , But just wondering what Toyota engines would be a good candidate for a wee cruiser "LJ71" , want to keep it light yet have enough balls for offroad - let rip with your opinions ???( it's going to be an Expedition sorta vehicle )

hear the sr20 have a problem with the heads ( rocker's or something ) once you modify them !
If you are considering that as an option, check out someof the drifting sites (D1NZ etc) as there are a few of those guys using high HP SR20's, so if there was an issue with the heads, I'm sure they will have found out what it takes to resolve it...
92 Diesel Auto Terrano. Stock as a rock, just not quite as exciting... but I'm working on it.

There are a lot of track cars running the SR20 the problem would be they run very hot when at high RPM and good boost and this is moving around a trak I suspect the temperature shock of throwing it in the water at low speed would be a bit harsh and keping it cool would be an issue.
I think I would go all motor the 2jz in a supra is an impressive engine, Rick has one in his hilux and loves it. It is a long block tho...
end of the day it is personal choice. Good luck

How about a 1g-gze 2 litre supercharged? They go well and the supercharger helps with torque.
Looks to have been done in Russia
and done to a few 2wd hiluxes in Australia.

You must be Looking at the wrong one

There was one on trademe done 110,000 in the vehicle for $400 a few weeks back... just have to ship it from Auckland...
If yours is an auto with an A34X then you can bolt the motor straight on as long as you have the 2JZ bellhousing.

sappose they would , seems a waste really unless they track race ,etc . They love their Blow off valves , hear it them miles away on friday & sat nights with blow valves going off & i live 7 klm from the city ( CHCH ).
rek'n if your payn $$$ for a conversion , might aswell get a turbo engine unless its a V8 , as can easily upgrade for more power , tho 800 bucks for a late model 2JZ-GE seems wicked .

Small world,Just started throwing a 1JZ-GTE into my LJ71 Bundera, only problems so far aside for engine mounts is the shorter input shaft on the R151 gear box Luckly i got a R154 box with the longer input shaft so geting the short output shaft from the R151 put onto the R154.........Hope it works LOL,If you have any Q's on this swap PM me.

Muzz >> curious how your going mating the 1jz-gte with the W151 box , does the 154 bellhousing & input shaft work ? wonder if its possible to use the 6 speed gearbox that comes behind it & modify it to fit the t/case ? that would be a wicked option , been looking up a bit on the 1jz-gte & the more i read , the more impressed i am , as you can get these engines really cheap with bugger all klm's on them , either halfcut or engine only , weird as its nearly half the price of a 2JZ-GTE !

Ive got the R151 box in my cruiser and the R154 is the same on the out side,so the bellhousing bolts on just getting either the input shaft from the R154 onto the R151 or the output shaft from the R151 onto the R154,yeah they look impresive on paper but having never driven one yet wont know for sure until i can test (THRASH) it,Hehehe.

Going to run the manual ECU computor and if i need anymore power (2LT compared to 1JZ-GTE hahahaaa!!!)i will pack the wastegates out a bit to up the boost, running the standard turbo clutch and pressure plate (mate told me how many lbs they were but to many woodys tonight to remember LOL),have read that you can go up to 600hp on standard internals but then again you cant belive every thing you read on the net aye..........LOL.........

I don't know if that question was answered in the posts after it but if it is not possible/easy you could always go for a datsun 720 divorced transfer (T100) case (they bolt up relatively easily to most front engine-RWD formats)
The only possible problem that I can see is the front and rear outputs are inline which may be a problem with an offset diff, if the engine is mounted back a little tho, and being a inline 6 and if the offset diff is the front one the angles may be not too bad on the front driveshaft (which is where you would get UJ failure if the angle were too extreme).
I hope this is helpful in some way

here is a pic of two T100 transfers sitting on my beach buggy, note on the left one that the front and rear driveshaft flanges are inline, and that the input flange is also inline and directly above the outputs.
good luck

gomulletgo >> i was think along those lines after i had a think about it , I seriosly don't think a datsun t/case like the one you are mentioning will have anywhere near the strength to hadle the power of a toyota turbo 1JZ or 2JZ engines , they put out 280 Hp ( max for japan ) , I know i can easliy get around 400hp out of a 1JZ & alot more with the 2JZ , i have heard of people destroying toyota t/cases with too much power . I was kinda thinda thinking gettn & modifiying a NP205 t/case ( 80's Ford f250-350 ),etc
Maybe will do like most people do & just the use the stock 5 speed ( different bellhousing ,etc )to the 1JZ , alot less hassle, thinkn i will will do this , then can always play around with other possibilitys once its in .

for my money, I would look seriouslyy at the donk out of rav 4J, lots of 2L camrys etc.
its the 3S-F series, 100BHP or thereabouts, if you go for the 3S-FE version, its fully electronic, with plug adapter so you can "talk" to it.
should take a turbo easy, as its the same block as the MR2 car. Revs like SHIT!!! I had a camry, sold it when its mileage crept up to the 250,000 kilometre mark cos it was just starting to smoke! some hard miles too~

thanx for the opinion , but for me it's either a 1JZ-GTTE or the bigger brother 2JZ-GTTE in the VVTi version ( Variable Valve timing ), spoke to a guy tonight who gets them in from Japan . i reckn if your doing a EFI engine conversion that will cost you so many thousand to do , then you might aswell get the one you realy want or you'll be disappointed in the end , these engines are really cheap for what they are anyway !
I would love the 2JZ-GTTE , but at the same time i think it will have too much power for a bundera & will end up breaking axles, driveshafts ,etc once its been finally tuned with a good aftermaket ECU like a EMS , Haltech , etc especially when its really easy to wind up the power with these .
turoa >> cheers for that mate , will look into it further !

Apparantly the nissan/datsun transfer is alot stronger than people give it credit for. I can't be bothered looking for threads on it at the mo. but this one was already in my favourites:

you have to admit dual datsun transfers, a V8, welded diffs and 38inch boggers does sound like alot of strain.
good luck with whatever option you go for...............just don't automatically discount the cheap option.......just cos it's cheap

Definatly a 1UZ-fe 4L V8, should fit in a LJ71 just fine. bellhousings for the R series boxes are available in NZ. single turbo 12psi boost=500FWHP
ive seen a few hiluxes with supercharged 1UZ's shit do they move.
ive just fitted my VZN130 with a 2JZ GE from a 93 supra.
nice engine
bit gutless below 4k tho
1UZ's average 240hp in standard for, but do a fwe intake mods and 300hp is easy to find. force feed it and u have sum good grunt.
1UZ's are still around the $1K mark, cheep lightwight reliable hp i rekon.
lighter than the diesel. lighter than a 2JZ

only problem with the 1uzfe is parts , clutchs , flywheels , etc are really expensive, seen a new billet flywheel on trademe for around $700 , etc .
to me a 1JZGTE or 2JZGTE with VVTi really sticks to mind , been buying a few old `ZOOM` magazines that cover the 2JZGTE , they`re the best 2nd hand jap performance engine bar none , leaving japan & you can get get them with 50,000+ klm for under 3 grand ( engine only ), read about one last night in a soarer in aussie that was dropped into it ( jap import )& run on EMS ecu ´& pumped out over 430 Kilowatts at the treads on a dyno , then read the latest zoom & theres a supra with forged rods & pistons & running over 1000hp at the treads on another dyno & its a daily driver/weekend warrior. read articles about this engine all the time .
1JZ-GTE sounds really good to me as they are like half the price & the main difference is that the block is just 25mm shorter , most people go for the bigger 2JZGTE , reason why the smaller 1JZ`s are alot cheaper !
